Happy Mother's Day all you wonderful mothers.  The children enjoyed making their gifts for you! Enjoy...hopefully you will have some moments to relax...and spend some extra time with your lovely children on Monday when we have our in-service!

Kindergarten Celebration:  Please mark your calendars for the Kindergarten Celebration on Wednesday, June 9th at 10:30am.  This is a very special morning! We hope you can join us in celebrating your child's accomplishments and year in kindergarten.  At the end of this celebration, summer vacation begins for the kindergarteners. Attire for the kindergarten celebration is out of uniform.  The children can wear whatever makes them feel special. A picnic is being planned following the Kindergarten Celebration at Linden Hills Park. More information to come. 

Fishing: May 21st is fishing at Lake Harriet with our  8th Grade Buddies. Poles will be provided. Children can wear their Earth Keeper Shirts! More information to come. 

Summer Birthday Pinata:  We will fill a pinata to celebrate all the summer birthdays. If you would like to send in items for the inside, please send 11 of each item. Examples: Little balls, stickers, birthday favors, erasers, special straws...I will put all the items in individual bags, so each child gets a bag.  I will also provide a treat to eat. Pinata items may be brought in at any time. We will celebrate Monday, June 7th. The rain date will be Tuesday, June 8. 

Map Test:  We are finished with the NWEA Map standardized testing.  The children did a nice job navigating the technology and focusing on their test answers.  I am so proud of their effort.  Next year in first grade the children will test in the Fall and Spring.

A Recap of Our Week:

Literacy: We continue to practice reading and writing words containing short and long vowels and diagraphs. We also reviewed the letters R - V. We have made a lot of progress with our sight words - please keep practicing these at home! New sight words: where, from

Literature we read: The Most Magnificent Thing, Listen, Buddy!, Big Feelings, A Bad Case of the Stripes, Dolphins and Calves, The Supersmart Dolphin

Math: We worked with partner numbers to ten and practiced making teen numbers. The children each made a "teen numbers" book with numbers 11 - 20. We also practiced our addition skills using dominos and our subtraction skills playing the "Lucky Duck"  dice game.  

Science: We love learning about ocean animals! This week we learned all about dolphins. We read several books about dolphins and watched a video about them as well. We learned about what it means to be a mammal, and that dolphins are mammals just like us. We also learned that they cannot breathe underwater, but must come up for air and breathe our of their "blowhole". We then wrote down some of the interesting facts we learned. Next week we will learn about Sea Turtles!

Religion: This week we talked about the Rosary. We also talked about May being the month that honors Mary, our mother in heaven.  We have been praying the Hail Mary every day. 

Skills Update:

Counting to 100: 9 of us can count all the way to 100 by ourselves. Only 1 more to go!

Shoe Tying: 9 of us are in the Shoe Tying Club with Mrs. Hughes. Only 1 more to go!

Other skills: We continue to practice our phone numbers, addresses, and naming the days of the week in order. 

Homework:

Please continue to read with your child at home. Board games and card games are great ways to practice math skills. 

Challenge Math Challenge Math is always optional and builds upon the skills we have worked on in class. Packets are sent home in your child’s folder on Fridays.

School News:

Travel Plans and Absences
Students who are absent from school due to trips, appointments or short-term illness will be marked as an excused absence. Teachers will no longer be offering distance learning/live class options for absences or illness unless a student is in extended quarantine. K - 4 students should connect with their homeroom teacher to check-in on daily assignments.

June 9th is the last day of school. Summer vacation for the kindergarteners begins after a morning celebration.
