ELA: Over the next 3 weeks the children will discover many details about animals as they read both nonfiction and fiction selections. These texts encourage readers to be curious as they investigate animal life.
Writing: Research Essay
Vocabulary Strategies: Synonyms, Words about time and position, inflection-ing
Math: Students will be learning various addition and subtraction strategies. They will also generate their own addition and subtraction equations when solving story problems.
Religion: The first graders will be learning about the Holy Trinity, Holy Family and parts of the Bible. They will learn that God is love, and we share in the love of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. The Holy Famialy teaches us about family life, honoring God, work adn love. We learn from the Bible how to show love for God and others.
Social Studies: Our big idea for this month is People and events shape history. Students will learn about changes that have occured over time. We will talk about timelines and they will make and present a timeline of their life or an important event. We will take a field trip to the History Museum to learn more about the past, present and future.
Science: Air and Weather. We will explore the natural world by using simple instruments and calendars to observe and monitor change. We will use new tools and methods to build on their understanding of the weather and to find out about properties of air by exploring how objects interact with air. The driving question for the module is what is all around us and what do we observe in the sky above us?
Students observe daily changes in air temperature and connect them to the daily movement of the Sun in the sky. They monitor changes in hours of daylight over the seasons and connect them to changing weather conditions. And they find the Moon in the day and night skies and monitor its movement over the month
