Enrichment and exploration are an important part of Carondelet's middle school curriculum. As recommended by the National Middle School Association, Carondelet's 6th, 7th and 8th graders are offered a variety of enrichment electives that provide an exploratory experience for students in various disciplines. Students enroll in two electives per trimester.
Trimester 1 Offerings (students will indicate their top three preferences):
Tri 1 Advanced Art: Pop Art (7/8th grade only) Artists and designers use creativity, imagination, and innovation to make a work of art. Advanced lessons on the Elements and Principles of Design are presented to guide students through the process, enhance their understanding of art in the context of personal, public and professional communities, and develop their critical, creative and collaborative reasoning skills and performance. Examples by artists and designers from around the world will be studied, including a fun introduction to the history of Pop Art. Inspired by Pop Art such as the Spoonbridge and Cherry by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje Van Bruggen, students will create their own Pop Art sculptures using a variety of materials. Repeating students will have new options.
Tri 1 Garage Band for iPad Learn the basics of the GarageBand app while creating and editing your own music. Topics will include digital instruments, loops, recording, and basic music theory
Tri 1 Shadowgraphy Let's tell stories through shadow puppets! You will be using your hands to make all sorts of fun shapes and creatures to create shadows and tell a story! Let's create adventurous skits that will take us into the shadows of creativity!
Tri 1 Intramurals Community building, teamwork, sportsmanship, and physical activity make CCS enrichment intramurals an enjoyable experience for all. Students will be divided into four teams and play a schedule of other teams in various activities both in the gym, and outside (weather permitting). Each team will consist of varying grade levels, and players not involved in current games may be asked to participate in score keeping, and even officiating. Join the fun for this exciting new enrichment!
Tri 1 Library Discover the wonderful world of books and media. In this class, students will get the opportunity to checkout and read books from the library as well as create book-related projects such as book posters and promotional videos.
Tri 1 S’More Math This enrichment is for those who need/would like additional support as they progress through their year in math. Ms. Sousa can offer a re-teach of the concept you may need additional instruction with, or provide support as you complete your math homework or study for a math exam.
Tri 1 Newsletter Are you interested in writing articles for the Middle School Newsletter? In this class, you will learn all aspects of publishing a school newsletter. From writing headlines to photojournalism, we will cover it all!
Tri 1 Quiet Study This enrichment is meant for students who need extra time or support in completing their assignments. Maybe you are heavily booked with sports or after school activities this trimester and need more time to complete your assignments, or perhaps you are needing some time to get organized and work on your study skills. Students will have the opportunity to get to work in a quiet, supportive setting. Space is limited.

Tri 2 Library Discover the wonderful world of books and media. In this class, students will get the opportunity to checkout and read books from the library as well as create book-related projects such as book posters and promotional videos.
Tri 2 Advanced Art: Set Design (7/8th grade only) Learn about set design and create many of the props and sets for the upcoming Carondelet play. Advanced lessons on the Elements and Principles of Design are presented to guide students through the process, enhance their understanding of art in the context of personal, public and professional communities, and develop their critical, creative and collaborative reasoning skills and performance. Students will construct parts of the many scenes and may include a large backdrop.
Tri 2 Yearbook This enrichment is for anyone interested in yearbook design and capturing photographic memories! You will be trained in the Jostens Yearbook design program and given a page or more to create, layout, and design for the 2019-2020 yearbook. Space is limited.
Tri 2 Savoring Stillness: A Workshop on Just Being You This workshop will explore techniques of relaxation, pranayama (breath), and restorative yoga for self reflection and listening to the inner voice. Examples of exploration through art, journaling, meditation and more will be covered. These tools can be practiced in the chaos of a busy day or the quiet of a restless night. The goal is to be with what is and understand what we can do or not do according to our internal landscape. Students will need a yoga mat.
Tri 2 Bucket Drumming Make some noise and play some beats on found-percussion instruments, including buckets and trash cans. Topics will include basic rhythm, drum cadences, and rhythmic games
Tri 2 Yarn Art Make your own yarn art! Unique and custom handmade pieces. Have fun creating a colorful whimsical piece.

Tri 3 Pop Music History Learn the roots of your favorite music while exploring the history of Rock & Roll, Hip-Hop, Country, and other genres.
Tri 3 Crosses Learn about some of the different crosses and make some of your own using different mediums! A beautiful tribute to Jesus.

Tri 3 Advanced Art: iPad Photography (7/8th grade only) The photographer Ansel Adams once said, “You don’t take a picture, you make it.” In this advanced art class, students learn how to make a photograph through lessons about composition, light & shadow, speed, aperture, creativity, and placement using an iPad camera. Advanced lessons on the Elements and Principles of Design are presented to guide students through the process, enhance their understanding of art in the context of personal, public and professional communities, and develop their critical, creative and collaborative reasoning skills and performance. Students will use this knowledge to better create esthetic black & white and color photographs while also exploring a variety of photo apps.
