Lent:  Through almsgiving, works of charity, and prayer, students here at Carondelet are entering fully into the season of Lent in preparation for the great feast of Easter.  Some of the ways the students are doing these things are:  making clay crucifixes and illustrating the Stations of the Cross in Art class, donating to Waite House and Operation Rice Bowl, completing family Lenten activities at home, creating a special Lenten ABC Book (“a” is for ashes, “b” is for baptism, “c” is for cross, etc.), writing letters to the elderly and homebound, concentrating on performing good deeds or service for others, choosing one positive thing to work on each day, listening to and discussing additional scripture readings, participating in special Lenten prayer services and the Stations of the Cross.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Dividends for Life was the theme for Catholic Schools Week. Among the dividends gained with a Catholic education are knowledge, morals, discipline and faith. The following are excerpts from essays written by students in Mr. Grabowski’s communications classes.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Two other dividends are morals and discipline. At Carondelet discipline is very important. Going to school here for nine years I have learned to respect the teachers and my classmates. Carondelet teachers do not tolerate disrespectful behavior from students and if students or teachers are disrespected, there are consequences. Even though having consequences are sometimes frustrating and not fun, you learn from that and don’t do it again”…..Macy Mancini.

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Knowledge reminds me of school and how the teachers know a lot of information and teach it to us. It reminds me of how little we know about God but also, how real we know he is. At Carondelet we not only learn subjects like math and science, but we also learn about God and building character. When I first switched from a public school to Carondelet, I thought it was going to be like Sunday school every day, but really it’s a normal school that teaches you how to be a better Christian" .... Gunnar Lundberg

<!--[if !supportEmptyParas]--> <!--[endif]-->

Carondelet has helped me sculpt my moral values. I know I will always remember to, most importantly, treat others, as I would like to be treated. This includes not gossiping about other people or harming them in anyway. Another moral value that Carondelet has given me is to protect the environment in any way possible”.…. Jordan Shochatovitz

Penny War - We are still counting our pennies from the Help Heal Haiti drive. Results will be posted next week.

Catholic Schools Week - Closing Catholic Schools Week Mass this Sunday, Feb. 7 at STA! Carondelet families, teachers and staff are encouraged to join St. Thomas the Apostle for the 9:00 AM Mass this Sunday, Feb. 7 for the closing Catholic Schools Week service. To show our school spirit, we're encouraging students to wear their school uniforms. We're very fortunate for the prayers and support of our two sponsoring parishes. We hope you can join us!

Open House - Thank you to everyone who helped with this year's Admissions Open House, including the teachers and staff, the hospitality and maintenance crews, nursery attendees, greeters, tour guides, student performers and parent drivers. What a night! We had over 50 prospective families in attendance, many of whom have already registered for next year. Thank you to everyone who has helped spread the word about this great community!

Enrollment Applications - Whether you are new to Carondelet or are an existing family with an incoming kindergartener, your application for enrollment is due Monday, Feb. 8. Acceptance letters will be mailed Feb. 16. We are anticipating three full kindergarten classes next year, so it's important that you turn in your application by the deadline.

Author Michael Hall Visiting Carondelet -  In celebration of "I Love to Read Month", author Michael Hall will be visiting students at Carondelet's Lower Campus on Friday, Feb. 12. Michael Hall will read from his beautifully illustrated book, My Heart is Like a  Zoo.

Coffee with Becky -  The next Coffee with Becky is scheduled for Wednesday, Feb. 10 in the Lower Campus Baskfield Room (outside the cafeteria) from 7:30-9:00 AM. The topic will be "Incorporating Technology into the Classroom".

Report Cards:  A reminder to parents, 2nd quarter report cards for students in grades K-5 were posted last week to Chuchwerks. Please contact Jeanne or Lenore if you are having difficulty accessing your student's records.

COMPOSTING AT CARONDELET - The composting program is starting at Carondelet on Feb 8th! For the first few weeks we'll need parent monitors to help the kids figure out which items go in the compost, and which items go in the trash. After that, we'll have 7th and 8th graders monitoring at Upper in exchange for service hours. If you or your child can help, please click here to see available slots and email Felicity Britton to let her know which shifts you can help with. The kids will have had some training, the bins have signage and there will be educational posters around the school. Volunteers will receive a quick email primer and can ask questions. Composting reinforces Carondelet values like caring for the earth. Please help us make this program a success!

We're also looking for lidded bins to collect organics in the classrooms -if you have any large lidded ice cream pails at home, these would be perfect. Please drop off at either office for teachers to pick up.

Magazine Drive:  The magazine drive kicks off on Monday, February 8th with assemblies at both campuses.  Look for catalogs and ordering information to come home on Monday.  Thanks in advance for your support!

We are still looking for some volunteers who can give about 2 hours of their time to help record the orders.  The dates are Wednesday, February 17th and Tuesday, February 23rd from 10:00-12:00.  If you are able to help, please contact Maureen Monchamp (952-929-7436 or tmmonchamp@msn.com).  Also contact Maureen if you are willing to help coordinate this fundraiser next year.  Grab a friend and the two of you could work together.  It's any easy way to get involved and support Carondelet!

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK - MORE INFORMATION COMING HOME WITH THE CHILDREN

Catholic Schools Week kicks off this Sunday at Christ the King! Carondelet families, teachers and staff are encouraged to join the Church of Christ the King for the 9:30 AM Mass this Sunday, January 31 in celebration of Catholic Schools Week. To show our school spirit, we're encouraging students to wear their school uniforms. On Sunday, Feb. 7th, Carondelet will join St. Thomas the Apostle at the 9 AM Mass for the closing Catholic Schools Week service. We are very thankful for the support of our two parishes, and hope you can join us. Check this week's BGE for a full list of Carondelet's Catholic Schools Week activities.

Boy Scout Pancake Breakfast:  In conjunction with Catholic Schools Week, The Boy Scouts will be hosting their annual pancake breakfast this Sunday, Jan. 31 at the Church of Christ the King from 8:45-11:30 AM. Please join us before or after Sunday Mass. Prices for the breakfast are: $7 adult, $5 kids, $6 or seniors, and families $25.00. Waite House - The food drive for Waite House was amazing this month - 2797 assorted food items.  What a tremendous effort on everyone’s part. Way to go!!

Seeking photos from Marathon -  If you have any photos, please email high resolution photo(s) to me - thedolphins@usfamily.net  or upload from the Carondelet home page, under links, under yearbookavenue.  If you have several pictures, you can also make a disk and leave at the office of either campus for Bo Dolphin.

Box Top and Milk Cap Contest Update - Thank you to all who participated in the Box Top and Milk Cap Contest!  We are currently in the process of tallying what we have.  We are hoping to have earned enough to purchase two new document cameras.  A special thank you to Ms. Berger’s class and Ms. Pote’s class as they are helping us collect and count box tops and milk caps on the lower campus.  Thank you also to Ms. Phillips and her middle school students for doing the same on the upper campus.  Once we’ve completed all the sorting, clipping and counting, we will let you know which homeroom earned an out-of-uniform day or an extra recess!   (And just because our contest ended, it doesn’t mean we won’t welcome more box tops and milk caps.  Please keep them coming as this is a great way for our school to earn cash!)

Reminder: UPPER CAMPUS STUDENTS - The snow piles are not good places to play after school due to the movement of cars throughout the parking lot. If someone slides off the snow pile you could land under the wheels of a car. We want to keep you all safe.

Magazine Drive:  The Magazine Drive is scheduled for February 8th-23rd.  Look for more information to be come soon.  I am looking for some volunteers to help record the orders on February 17th and February 23rd from 10:00-12:00.  Also, after 4 years of coordinating this fundraiser, I am looking for someone to take it over next year.  The time commitment is minimal and you could work with me this year to observe the process.  If you are interested in either of these opportunities, please contact me.
Many thanks, Maureen Monchamp (tmmonchamp@msn.com or 952-929-7436)

CLUB SAINT: In April, Carondelet students will have a two week Spring break. Club Saint is our extended day program. We are wondering how many families that use Club Saint currently will need those services the second week of spring break, April 5-9. Please contact Jodi Nilsen, Club Saint Director, if  your child (ren) will be attending Club Saint during the week of April 5-9. Thank you.

Athletes:  Want to check the directions to games,  schedules, standings and rules. SSYO has its own website at ssyomn.com.

Men’s 35+ CTK/STA Baseball Team - Parishioner Tim Sellner is exploring the level of interest in establishing a CTK/STA men’s 35 and older wood bat baseball team.  (Not all players would need to be parishioners.)  The metro area has a couple of leagues just for the old guys.  Games are about two times a week between Memorial Day and mid-August.  Conflicts are expected but you should be able to make at least half the games and should probably have played high school level baseball.  If interested please call Tim at 612-670-9240 or email him at Tsellner@Tanel360.com.

Pizza/Subway Volunteers - Pizza/Subway Volunteer assignment sheets are coming home from school today.  If you volunteered for this valuable service, please take a moment to unearth the form from your child's backpack, and make a note on your calendar of the dates you have received.  We would not be able to offer pizza and Subway to the students without your help!  The next session begins after Spring Break.

Welcome: We have two new students in our community beginning this week – Angelo (Kindergarten) and Nico ( 2nd grade) Bacic. The family has recently relocated from Arizona and moved into the neighborhood. It is wonderful to have you , Angelo and Nico with us.

News Notes: January 15, 2010

In Observance of Martin Luther King Jr. Day
, Carondelet Catholic School will be closed on Monday, January 18. Let this day remind us of how powerful one person’s actions can be in the area of social justice. As a faith-filled community, we ask that you keep in your constant prayers those devastated by the recent disaster in Haiti.

Waite House News:
Thanks to your generosity, Carondelet donated over $400 and 2,109 lbs of food to Waite House in November; 2,365 lbs from the December collection (which included a donation from the Morning with St. Nick proceeds); and 1,047 following the Christmas program. Great job sharing with others Carondelet families! What a tribute to your generosity.

Yearbook Sales: Don’t forget to turn in your yearbook order forms. Yearbooks are $16 and may be ordered online or by check (flyer sent home last Friday). If you order online, you may also personalize your yearbook for an additional fee. To order online, go to the Carondelet homepage, click on links, click on Yearbook Avenue and click to buy your yearbook. You must order by January 24th if you want any personalization. Otherwise, all orders are due by January 28th.

Inventor’s Fair Judges Needed: Carondelet is looking for judges for the 6th grade Inventor’s Fair on Thursday, Feb. 4th. (No experience necessary). The event begins at 6 pm and generally lasts a couple hours. Dinner is provided. Please contact Libby Sullivan at macdogstudio@mac.com if you are interested in helping or for more information.

Admissions Open House: Carondelet will be hosting an Admissions Open House for prospective families on Thursday, January 28 at 7 PM at the Lower Campus. This is a great opportunity to learn more about Carondelet and what we have to offer. If you know someone who might be interested, please encourage them to attend. Applications for the 2010-2011 school year are due Monday, Feb. 8, 2009.

WordMaster Challenge Winners: We have received notice that two Carondelet third graders have won highest honors in the WordMaster Challenge – a national language arts competition. The competition is entered by approximately 215,000 students annually, which consists of three separate meets held at intervals during the school year. Third grader, Sarah Kennedy earned a perfect score in this year’s first meet and Owen Cody also earned outstanding results in the meet. The students were coached for the Challenge by Mrs. Clark, Ms. Hera, and Ms. Rafferty. Next contest in February.

The WordMasters Challenge is an exercise in critical thinking that first encourages students to become familiar with a set of difficult new words and then challenges them to use those words to complete analogies expressing various kinds of logical relationships. Good job, Sarah and Owen.

Box Tops for Education Contest Jan 19-26th: Let’s see which homeroom can collect the most Box Tops for Education & Kemps Milk Tops! Coming up Tuesday 1/19 through Tuesday 1/26 we will be holding a contest that is open to all grades. The top collecting homeroom from each campus will be rewarded with an Out–Of-Uniform day or an extra recess! Please remember to bring in your “Box Tops for Education”, as it is a wonderful way to earn money for our school. Proceeds will go towards the purchase of an additional Document Camera for each campus. Box Tops coupons may be found on hundreds of General Mills products and partnering brands, like Cheerios®, Betty Crocker®, Hefty®, Juicy Juice, Ziploc®, Kleenex® and many more. You may also visit HYPERLINK 'http://www.boxtops4education.com/'www.boxtops4education.com for more information.

New Library Software: Through our new library software, Destiny Library Manager, Carondelet students and teachers are now able to access our book catalog, 24/7. The Destiny program strengthens the library/classroom connection along with the library/home connection. Within a few weeks they will be able to reserve titles using Destiny.

Welcome Back - We are back at school and everyone is “back in the groove” already. The students are delighted that warmer days are here so we can have outdoor recess again.  The benefits of going outside for fresh air and exercise cannot be measured.

THE LAPTOPS ARE HERE!!!! Due to the generosity of our parents in the annual fund drive, we were able to purchase 30 new Macbooks that will be located on two carts and a new server to meet the needs of the classrooms at the Upper Campus. The computer lab that has been a part of the school for the past two years was frequently overbooked with the demand.  It is our hope that these laptops help that situation and give our students more access to computers on a daily basis. The carts will be available to the middle school students and rotate through the other grades throughout this year. In addition, new switches and cables were installed on all the classroom computers on both campuses. Please stop by and see the computers in action. Ask your children what they are using the computers to do. Again, our sincerest appreciation to our families for providing us with the technology tools we need in today’s global world.

The Carondelet Upper Campus Library has been the recipient of donated computers to use for the new computer program Destiny and learning research skills. Now we have 7 computers serving our students in this area.

Christmas Program Video – The Christmas Program video is ready! Orders for purchases can be made until Friday, Jan 15, 2010. The cost is $5.00/DVD. This video was captured and produced by our parent, Andy Nugent, and is professional. Everyone will want this treasure of their child for years to come.

Beauty and Beastthe cast has been selected for the middle school play going into production in the next few weeks. Over 100 students auditioned for the show in front of the most difficult audience – their peers.  You all did a fine job and should be proud of your work. The enthusiasm for this activity was overwhelming. All of the students who tried out have a role in the play or are helping with costumes and sets. Mark your calendars for the production,  March 19, 20  & 21. Tickets will go on sale in early March.

A WHOLE LOT OF THANKS TO EVERYONE WHO CONTRIBUTED TO WAITE HOUSE IN DECEMBER.  Thanks to the efforts of many students and families, the food shelves of Waite House were full for the holidays. Special thanks to the fifth grade for receiving the bags at the Christmas Program.

Special Message to Middle School Families:  The middle school teachers have committed to listing their homework  and assignments on the Middle School Homepage-Homework. The information will be timely and stay on the site for a few weeks. The listings will be as concise and informative as possible. Your children are good resources.  Please work with us - the system may not be perfect every day but we are trying hard.

It was mentioned that sometimes a student has an assignment from the past, particularly with a specialist ( Spanish, music, computers and art). The teacher may not be in their room when the student wants to turn in the assignment. Please have them put their name on the paper and turn it in to Jeanne in the office.

ChurchWerks is a student information system and should be used for checking grades not assignments. The teachers are committed to posting their grades in a reasonably timed manner.

Teachers will acknowledge when they have received an email from you even though they may not have the answer immediately. Answers sometimes take longer than we wish they would.

We hope these attempts to improve communication will be fruitful for you and your children. PSST is a time set aside every day from 4:20-5:00 for students to receive extra help, finish a test, catch up on past homework, etc. Students may check the posted schedule for the weekly location. If you need to pick up your child before 5:00 please come into the classroom. We take our responsibility to keep the students safe very seriously.

Please let the teachers and me know whether the system is working or not. As we expect the children to get their assignments, give their best effort to complete them and hand them in on time, we, also, want to be held accountable. Good news is always welcome.

INVENTOR'S FAIR JUDGES NEEDED!  No experience necessary. The date is Thursday,  04  February, 2010. A dinner will be provided. The event begins at 6PM and  you are free to go once your team has finished judging, which usually  takes 2-3 hours.

News Notes, December 18, 2009

Thank You:  A big thank you goes out to all the students and families who attended the St. Nick’s event on Dec. 5th.  It was a huge success and everyone had a fun time. We are thankful also to our student council members who organized a visit from St. Nicholas here at school on Friday, Dec. 4th.  A candy treat helps to warm up any cold wintry day.

Annual Fund:  Thank you to everyone who has donated to this year's Annual Fund. For those of you who would still like to make a year-end gift, you can do so by visiting the Support Carondelet/Online Giving page of the CCS website. Again, we thank you for your continued generosity and support of Carondelet's mission.

Concert:  What  a wonderful Christmas concert last night.  The students worked hard to hone their singing and dancing skills. The kindergarteners won all our heart with the Santa masks and song.

Quiz Bowl: This week the Catholic School Eighth-Grade Quiz Bowl competition was held at the University of St. Thomas. Carondelet team consists of Patrick Adkins, Sam Durben, Caroline Riester, and Jordan Shochatovitz with Nick Stastny, serving as an alternate.  Forty-eight schools answered questions related to current events and general facts.  Carondelet students were defeated in the fourth out of six rounds.  They represented us well. Congratulations to the strong and knowledgeable team.

Welcome: We welcome Alison Wahlberg, a new kindergartener, and her family to our CCS community. Alison will be joining us in January when her family returns from living abroad. Alison will be a member of Mrs. Carney’s class.

Parent Volunteers Needed: The Lower Campus is seeking volunteers for lunchroom/playground for the months of Jan. and Feb.  Even though it is cold the children need the fresh air and someone to help supervise them.  Please give Lenore a call at 612.920.9075 or email her to volunteer.  Children like to see their parents in the school building. It sends a message that parents are interested in what their children are learning. Your presence supports in practice how much you value this special CCS education you have given them. If everyone contributes some time the jobs will be easier for everyone. It spreads the work around. Serving pizza or subways or supervising recess takes about a hour. We promise the reward of your child's face when they see you will be enough to make it worth your time.

Source Separated Organics:  The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners has approved a grant for Carondelet to begin a Source Separated Organics collection of trash. The grant will cover the cost of the bins and trash bags for one year on both campuses. It is our hope that the cost of trash removal will be decreased substantially. Students have begun emptying their extra milk into a bucket for disposal already. Just that action has reduced the weight of the garbage removed daily and put less in our landfills. Go Green!

The committee behind this environmentally conscious effort is lead by parent, Felicity Britton. School committee members are Jamie Hera, Sr. Kathleen, Brigid Berger, Meghan Pote, and Maureen Mack. News Notes, December 11, 2009

Fantastic!!  What an outstanding band concert was offered at the Lower Campus on Tuesday. The Beginning Band has made superb progress in their learning of an instrument in a short 5 months while the Concert Band outshines most high school bands in their musical tone and quality of performance. It was great to hear all the different sections of instruments present a part of the piece allowing the audience to hear the trumpets separate from the clarinets and the percussion.

Flu Shots:  This week’s flyer contains information about the H1N1 flu shot. Our Minneapolis Public Health nurse is advising us that the children need this vaccination to protect them from the H1N1 flu.

SCHOOL CLOSING:  Carondelet will not close school on winter days unless Minneapolis Public School closes. With a late start as ours, most of the roads have been cleared by the time we start school. We will not have early dismissals on snowy days either. We have found that the buses can return the children home safe on the regular schedule. To check Minneapolis Public School closing please check your local TV station.

A reminder: We still go outside for recess in the winter. Snow pants, gloves, hats, boots, and winter jackets help keep students warm.

Spirit Wear:  Looking for a Christmas present idea - Carondelet Spirit Wear is a great solution. Spirit Wear is available to purchase – contact Anne Borman at ac_borman@msn.com

Alumni News: Student Recognition Award.  This semi-annual event, sponsored by the Benilde –St- Margaret’s Parent Association, highlights students on the basis of character. Former Carondelet student,  Kasey Fan, 2007, was honored.

3rd Grade Wordmasters:  Third graders recently completed their first Wordmaster meet on December 3.  The Wordmaster competition is a national competition that tests students’ knowledge of words and their relationships. For the meet students were given 20 analogies to complete.  The analogies were designed to be challenging, and our third graders rose to that challenge!

Congratulations to the 13 third graders whose scores will be sent on to the national competition: Sarah Kennedy, Owen Cody, Logan McCloskey, Joey Geddes, Victoria Brimacomb, Natalie Swanson, Mason James, Keenan Conley, Alex Wenner, Max Gerstner, Henry Bitter, Jack Hendrickson and Annika Ronning.

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM ANNOUNCEMENT:  Making a meaningful difference in the lives of those who depend on Waite House for food is in our hands this month.  We are challenging all families to bring as much non-perishable food as your arms can hold to the Christmas program or dress rehearsal on Thursday, December 17th.

Eager student ambassadors will meet you at the door to take the food off your hands so you can be hands-free while locating your favorite seat. Our plan is to have the food to Waite House the very next day.

Remember, the Christmas program is free, making a difference in the fight against hunger; PRICELESS

CHRISTMAS PROGRAM – CHILDREN SHOULD ARRIVE AT SCHOOL AT 6:30. In an effort to respect all the needs of our audience, the Christmas Program will offer an intermission about 8:15 following the 5th graders performance. The kindergarten through 5th grade will have performed.  This intermission will allow families with younger children to depart if they wish. We realize that it may be difficult for young children to be quiet and attentive for more than an hour.  We ask that our audience be respectful in honoring the program and not leave or move about in the middle of a performance. If you choose to leave at intermission, you must take your child with you.

For the Christmas Program, the pews will be labeled with each grade for seating. Please sit in the assigned pews for your child’s grade. Hopefully, this will give everyone a good view and eliminate the need to “ save spaces.”  THE CHURCH DOORS WILL BE LOCKED UNTIL 6:30.

All students are requested to wear their Concert Dress on Dec. 17th for the dress rehearsal.   Please bring your uniform clothes to change into after the rehearsal.  We will provide hangers and racks to place Concert Dress on for the rest of the day.  Attention parents: The rehearsal at 10:15 on Dec. 17th is an excellent time to take pictures.

A professional videographer in our parent group, Andy Nugent, father of Liam, will videotape the evening performance of the Christmas Program and produce the DVD. A form has been sent home to purchase a copy of the video- $5.00.

GUIDELINES FOR CHRISTMAS CONCERT DRESS - We would like everyone to be dressed in a respectful manner to honor our audience- parents, grandparents, neighbors, and friends.  Skirts and dresses for girls- must be no more that two inches above the knees and necklines must be appropriate. No backless or spaghetti-strapped dresses please. If wearing a sleeveless dress, girls may wear a shrug but it should be tied or pinned. Shoes should have no more than 2-inch heels.  Shirt and pants or suit for boys – ties are optional. Shoes of a dark color are recommended.

Big Thanks - Another Christmas Shoebox Success!  We wrapped 155 boxes for Waite House. We ran out of boxes (and steam) before we ran out of items! Thanks to you all for another fabulous year.  Your generosity was overwhelming!

Since we had many fun and educational items left over we decided to spread the joy around.  St. Phillip’s, Families Moving Forward, and immigrant families will be getting the remaining gifts.  Thanks to Mary Jane Steinhagen for coordinating the distribution to the remaining groups.

Also a BIG THANK YOU to Bill Gaines who delivered the shoeboxes to the Waite House.

Now to our unsung heroes:  Jeanne Phenow and Lenore Costello (Upper and Lower Campus School Secretaries) who had to live with piles and piles of stuff in their very small offices. Your help is always appreciated.

                                                                                          Nancy Greer & Nancy Fritz

Annual Fund:  Please remember the Carondelet Annual Fund this year. Tuition at Carondelet only covers about 70% of the actual cost to educate our students. The Annual Fund helps us keep tuition affordable, provide financial aid and keep class sizes small. You can make a gift by regular mail in the envelope you received or online at our school's website. Just designate your gift to the Annual Fund on the drop down menu on the online giving page. Thank you for all you do to support Carondelet Catholic School.

Congratulations to Nick Driessen and Will Jarvis on being awarded the Benilde-St. Margaret Red Knight Award for outstanding academic, athletic and service contributions to Carondelet and their local parish.

The Catholic Spirit has an EXTRA educational edition coming to every home in the next weeks. Check this website to learn what alumni say about a Catholic Education. http://specialeditions.thecatholicspirit.com

Successful Book Fair-Thank you, Thank you, Thank You!!  Thank you to everyone who supported Carondelet Catholic School’s book fair at Barnes & Noble. It was great to receive your donations of new books along with a profit of $901 from total sales.

Thanks to the following students and parents for helping at the book fair: 7th Graders  Dani Dolphin, Hana Fritz, Catie Orren,  and Madison Schmidt.  Parents:  Karin Glanville, Renee Burns, Laura Johnson, Maureen Monchamp, Amy Casey-Paal, and Carrie Voda. The support shown for CCS is greatly appreciated.  See you at our 2010 Book Fair on November 20th  &  21st.

ATTENTION ALL MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS:  Beauty and the Beast auditions for those interested stage performers will be held the week of 12/06. Last year we had 85% participation in either a stage experience or a back stage experience so please consider joining us.

Auditions dates and locations are as follows:

Sunday, December 6th, 12:00-4:00 in the auditorium

Monday, December 7th, 5:00-7:00 in the social hall

Tuesday, December 8th 5:00-7:00 in the auditorium

Callbacks:  Friday, December 11  4:30-7:30 in the auditorium

COMPOSTING:  In 2010, Carondelet plans to start composting our lunchtime food waste. That means the students will use a separate container for “organic” material such as food waste, paper napkins and waxed paper, which will then be turned into compost at a commercial composting facility. Composting the organic material sequesters greenhouse gases and provides an environmentally friendly alternative to synthetic fertilizers. Compost replenishes soil, reduces erosion and diminishes storm water runoff from contaminating our wetlands, lakes and streams. Please look for more information next week on how you can pack “litter less lunches” or help support the compost program.

First Annual Morning with St. Nick: In conjunction with St. Thomas the Apostle's Just Giving fair-trade sale, Carondelet will be hosting our first annual Morning with St. Nick on Saturday, December 5th from 9 AM-Noon at Carondelet's Lower Campus. The event will include visits and photos with St. Nick, a kids-only holiday shoppe, cookies, refreshments, and much more. Mark your calendars and spread the word!

Kids-Only Holiday Shoppe-Student Volunteers Needed:
The Morning with St. Nick planning committee is looking for a few middle-school volunteers to help in the Kids-Only Holiday Shoppe. Please contact Cindy Murtha or Megan Hower if you'd like to help.

Second Annual Operation Shoebox: The Boy and Girl Scouts, Daisys, and Webelos will be packing and wrapping these shoeboxes on Dec. 6. The group is in need of contributions for the boxes such as lotion, small toys, toothpaste, mittens, art supplies, deodorant etc. You can bring any donations you might have to either campus office.

Carondelet's now on Facebook! For those of you on Facebook, be sure to check out Carondelet's new Facebook page! You'll find school contact info as well as invitations to upcoming events. Follow the Facebook link on the Carondelet's homepage.

Upper Campus Pick-Up: If you pick up your child after school please use the designated parking spots in the playground area or the streets. Do not park along the sidewalk by the playground. We are trying to keep all our students safe.

Scrip Gift-Card Fundraiser: This holiday season, Home & School is trying a new gift card fundraising opportunity called Scrip. This fundraiser is not replacing any other fundraiser at this time. We are exploring Scrip to determine if it is a fundraiser we might want to use in the future. Please look for details and order forms in the BGE today.

Keep Clipping those Box Tops! Did you know our school earned $1,254.00 last year from Box Top
collections? Please remember to clip and collect Box Tops for Education; it is a wonderful way to earn money for our school. This year we are hoping to earn enough to purchase new computer carts for our Macs in the computer lab. Box Tops coupons may be found on hundreds of General Mills products and partnering brands, like Cheerios®, Betty Crocker®, Hefty®, Juicy Juice, Ziploc®, Kleenex® and many more. The holidays are a great time to look for box-tops while shopping for your holiday baking needs. Also, stay tuned for a fun class collection competition coming soon!!! So let's start clipping for cash!

Parent Volunteers Needed: Each week our parents volunteer about 25 hours of time to help with marketing, serving pizza or subway, chaperoning a field trip, working in the library, coaching an athletic team, attending a mass, serving on the Board of Directors, etc. Children like to see their parents in the school building. It sends a message that parents are interested in what their children are learning. Your presence supports in practice how much you value this special CCS education you have given them. If everyone contributes some time the jobs will be easier for everyone. It spreads the work around. If you have not volunteered this year, it is time to come forth. Serving pizza or subways takes a lunch hour. We promise the reward of your child's face when they see you will be enough to make it worth your time.

Beauty and the Beast Auditions: Middle-School auditions for Carondelet's spring musical Beauty & the Beast will begin in December. Watch for more info in upcoming News Notes!

Attention 8th Graders: Yearbook Quotes and Baby Pictures are due 12/1. All baby pictures should be given to Gracie Hellstrom. Quotes for Mr. Nutter's class should be given to Maddie Helm and quotes for Mr. Graboski's class should be given to Ellie Martin.

2010-11 Kindergarteners: For planning purposes, we'd like to get an idea of the number of siblings planning to start Kindergarten next fall. If you have a preschooler who will be eligible to start Kindergarten in 2010, we ask you to email Megan Hower or Becky Farber.

Congratulations to Mrs. Berger's 1st grade for winning the class prize at the Lower Campus for Marathon! You will all be enjoying an extra recess under this beautiful November sky. Ms. Huebsch and Mrs. Mack's classes have earned an out-of-uniform day! Please keep returning those remaining outstanding pledges. Thanks to all of you who made this Marathon a success. It is crucial to the marathon success and the school’s financial budget that we collect the money pledged. We still have about $1800 of the pledged amount out. We are counting on it!!! Let’s get our full participation to the 100% mark.

THANK YOU - The second grade classes would like to thank Ms. Paola Obetz for preparing a special activity to celebrate Dia de los Muertos. Students loved decorating sugar skulls and learning more about the tradition of Day of the Dead.

Volunteers needed: The Lower Campus is seeking volunteers for lunchroom/playground for the months of Jan. and Feb. Even though it is cold the children need the fresh air and someone to help supervise them.

Keep in your prayers: Bill Geddes, father of Cassie (5th) and Joey (3rd) has been deployed with the Army to Afghanistan for 1 year. Our thoughts and prayers are with him and the rest of our troops.

News Notes: October 30, 2009

Thank You: Many thanks to Bill Kirkpatrick for arranging the free delivery of our bike rack. Many thanks to the parents who drove the children between campuses last week for our volleyball game:  Karin Glanville, coordinator extraordinaire, Kay Bromelcamp, Anne Borman, Julie Peters, Katy Eiden, Ellen Butler, Harlan Hegmna, Susam Hellstrom, Alex Cannon, Michelle Strietz, Brenda Roth, Mary Gearen, Bridget Peterson, Michelle Cunningham, and Lucy Voltz.  Talk about a transportation plan in 25 minutes!

With Sympathy: Our condolences to Mrs. Becky Harris,  2nd grade teacher, on the death of her father in Sioux Falls, S. D.  Our condolences to the Swenson/Frazee family on the death of their wife/mother, Amy Swenson.  Our condolences to Laure O’Keeffe on the death of her father-in-law in New Mexico.  Additionally, our condolences to Roger Grabowski on the death of his father-in-law in Wyoming.  It has been a tough two weeks for CCS in this area and we are hopeful that there will be peaceful days ahead.  Our thoughts and prayers are with those members of our community whose hearts are heavy.

Caps for Kids: The students enjoyed wearing their caps and sponsoring the Caps for Kids program. The program helps families of children with cancer. Carondelet  students raised $476.00

Congratulations: Janelle Jacques, former 4th- grade teacher and her husband, Chad Pitman, are the proud parents of Alice Elizabeth, born on Oct. 14, 2009. She weighed 8 lbs. 2oz. Congratulations to Janelle and Chad.

Reminder: We are experiencing an increase in absenteeism due to illness. A reminder: children may not return to school unless they have been fever free for 24 hours without fever reducing medication. Some other tips from the Minnesota Health Dept follow:

Call or take your child to a doctor right away if your child of any age has:
• Fast breathing or trouble breathing
• Bluish or gray skin color
• Not drinking enough fluids
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• Not waking up or not interacting
• Being so irritable that the child does not  want to be held
• Flu-like symptoms improve but then return with fever and worse cough
• Has other conditions (like heart or lung disease, diabetes, or asthma) and develops flu symptoms, including a fever and/or cough.

The H1N1 vaccine is available now for medically fragile children and will be available for all children in the coming weeks and parents are encouraged to speak with their medical provider about getting their child immunized against the virus.

The Minnesota Department of Health has just launched a toll-free Minnesota FluLine (MN FluLine) at 1-866-259-4655 for information about H1N1 and treatment options.

Screen your children before sending them to school. Notify the school if your child is ill with influenza like illness, as this information is being tracked for the Minnesota Department of Health.

Marathon: Keep those pledges coming in!  We have pledges of $85,465 and have collected $75,190. It is critical that we collect the remaining amount to achieve our goal.  Every dollar counts toward the goal. We have almost 100% participation by the student body. If those students who did not participate could bring in $1.00 each, what a celebration we could have!  It is a genuine community builder when we can all celebrate setting a goal and reaching that goal. Thanks to Brenda Roth and Mary Kelly for a fine job of organizing volunteers and leading this marathon effort.  Job well done.

Marathon: What a success. A fun, family day was had by all despite the rain.  Thank you to everyone who participated. A BIG thanks to all the volunteers.

It was great to see so many smiling faces brave a chilly wind and cloudy morning last Sat. for Carondelet's Marathon. With tattoos and rally posters, games and refreshments, we had a great time.  Wed. Oct. 14 is our last collection day for Marathon.  Please turn in all outstanding pledges by this date.  So far, we have more than $82,600 pledged!  We are not quite at 100 percent student participation.  Don't forget, just $1.00 from every student will earn an all-school movie party.  Individual classes are in tight competition for winning a class out-of-uniform day or extra recesses.  Thanks to all who participated, volunteered and supported our school in this fundraising effort!

Volunteer Health Aides needed at our Upper Campus - Volunteers are needed daily on the Upper Campus.  This volunteer job entails administering band-aids, ice packs and a friendly smile to our Upper Campus students as needed.  The time commitment is 12:15 to 2:15 pm.   We would like to begin staffing Oct 12th.   If you are able to help, please contact Amy Brandl, 612.374.5233 or grafkola@aol.com.   Many, many thanks from Jeanne!

Camp St. Croix Report: On Friday, October 2nd, the 6th grade returned from a three-day trip to Camp St. Croix. Everyone had a marvelous time! The Camp St. Croix counselors praised our students for their excellent behavior, focus and enthusiasm!

Students learned teamwork through Initiative and Advanced Initiatives classes, studied Prairie Environments, and built shelters in a minimal impact camping class. Teamwork and physical prowess were put to the test when students participated in the Climbing Wall challenge. In the evening, students had a presentation on wolves, were active participants in the Dr. Suess’s production of “The Lorax” and assumed the roles of various interest groups in a Town Hall Meeting to discuss the possible sale and development of some of the Camp St. Croix grounds property. On Friday, students from both Carondelet Catholic School and Nativity of Bloomington played the game, “Predator- Prey”.

The teachers and students would especially like to thank those parents who accompanied us as chaperones. Their help made our trip such a tremendous success! Standardized Testing: Begins on Monday, Sept.28th. Please encourage your child to eat breakfast and give all their efforts to their best performance on the test.

Developmental Design Summer Learning: Responsive Classroom is a community-building program employed in the elementary graders at Carondelet. Some of the middle school teachers attended the middle school level training of the Responsive Classroom program- Developmental Design. In the workshop the teachers learned about community building and the adolescent’s need for relationship, autonomy, competence, and fun. Teachers learned techniques to be cognizant of these needs as they plan for their day. In addition, cooperation, assertion, responsibility, empathy and self-control are skills every middle schooler must develop. The end goal of building self-control within the students themselves can be achieved through proactive discipline procedures where students establish social contracts and practice routines and procedure that will demonstrate their understanding and commitment to that contract which creates a positive and productive learning environment.  Through a variety of activities the teachers worked on methods to improve community and social skills in their classes through the use of Circle of Power and Respect, which is used in morning meetings. As we began the year, each teacher introduced the program and the students formulated the social contract. It has helped to create an atmosphere of positive energy, respect for one another, trust, and structure that makes Carondelet Middle School a great place to be. I am proud of every member of these teams and every student who have worked hard to make this program part of our Carondelet program.

News Notes  Sept.18, 2009

Parent Night: We had an outstanding attendance for Parent Night. Despite the heat, everyone learned a lot about what their children and their teachers are planning for the year. There was so much positive energy everywhere - we are off to a great start!

WED. SEPT. 23 TRANSPORTATION- On the morning of Wednesday, Sept. 23, upper campus students will get off the bus at the lower campus for the all-school prayer service. Carpools and bikers should also come to the lower campus. The upper campus students will walk back to the upper campus after the prayer service is complete. A permission slip has been sent home. This permission slip will cover all transportation modes (walking or bus) between the two campuses.

Marathon:  On Wednesday, we kicked off our Carondelet Marathon fundraiser with a skit performed by our Student Council. If you haven't yet seen the marathon pledge envelope and bright yellow information sheet, check with your student. Next Wed. is our first pledge date and a chance for your student to bring in pledges. We are still in need of volunteers to help with: Phonathon, evenings of Sept 28 and 29; artwork, help students prepare"rally" posters during the noon hours and leaf raking; coordinate and/or supervise teams of 7th and 8th graders who earn service hours for their efforts. Please contact Brenda Roth or Mary Kelly if you can lend us a hand; it will be greatly appreciated.

Special Friends' Olympics: Today the 8th graders and kindergarteners paired up for the Special Friends' Olympics at Carondelet's lower campus. Today was the first meeting and event for the Special Friends. The morning included relays, games, apples, refreshments and fun! A special thank you to all the parents who attended and helped with this special event. It was a great morning!

The CCS Flu Plan: The flu season may be upon us. The media reports vary from day to day, but the season could reach pandemic proportions. We are being updated by the Minnesota Health Dept., Minnesota Dept. of Education, and our Mpls. appointed school nurse, Nancy Barenthin frequently and if new information arrives we will pass it on to our families. The steps we have in place are:

  1. Firm instruction to the students on washing hands, coughing into elbows and not sharing eating utensils or drinks, and throwing tissues away immediately after use.
  2. Hand sanitizers have been placed in every room and students are encouraged to use them frequently.
  3. Encourage students to not to touch your nose, face, or eyes.
  4. If a child becomes ill at school we will isolate them and contact parents for pick up.
  5. If a child has the flu-like symptoms( fever, cough and/or sore throat) they need to stay home and not return to school and need to be fever free without fever-reducing medication for 24 hours.
  6. The door knobs, faucets, and hand railings in the buildings are being sanitized and disinfected.
  7. For the latest information check the Mpls. Public School site www.mpls.k12.mn.us.

OUTSTANDING ALUMNI NEWS: Three former Carondelet students have been named semifinalists in the 2010 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are: Michael Carter (Blake School), Isabella Dawis (Southwest H.S.) and Kirsten Elfstrand (De LaSalle H.S.). Congratulations!

Phones: The teacher phones at the upper campus are ringing in rooms during class. If you need to reach a teacher please call Jeanne and she will forward the message. We hope to fix the problem soon.

CCS Job Opening: Due to the increased enrollment in the Extended Day- Club Saint program we are looking for another person to work on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday mornings. The job entails helping set up for breakfast, interacting with the students and clean-up and preparation for the next day. The hours would be 8:00AM – 9:30 AM. The pay is $15.00/ hour and would be limited to school days. If interested, please submit resume and references to Mrs. Farber, Principal.

Guided Reading: This year, some teachers at Carondelet are beginning a literacy program aimed at improving differentiation in reading. It's called Guided Reading, and it will be phased in over the coming years as teachers are trained in this program. Guided Reading is based on the philosophy that all good readers are good problem solvers and use many strategies to read new words and comprehend their meaning. Small groups of students, grouped by ability, meet with a teacher to read an appropriately leveled text, while learning word-attack and comprehension strategies. For more information, click here.

Standardized Testing: CCS student in grades 3- 8 will be taking the Stanford Achievement Test (SAT 10) beginning on Monday, Sept. 28. Stanford has an 80-year history of testing. They have strived to exceed expectations, are supported by accurate research and data, incorporate the latest ideas in educational testing, and employ the most current educational methods. It is anachievement test seeking to find out what the student knows now. The test is aligned with NCLB, state and national standards in addition to being gender and racially diverse in its format. The SAT 10 will provide us with valuable information to keep our curriculum current, and hold us accountable. It is scored against national norms from 2007. The parent report will rank your child below average, average, or above average compared to other students nationally. It is an easy to read and informative report. It is a very comprehensive test including math, reading, social studies, language use and science. The best preparation for children is a good breakfast, a good night’s sleep and a “can-do” positive attitude. Given the outstanding academic reputation of Carondelet, we are sure our students will perform very well.

Ladies Night Out:  On Wednesday, Sept. 30 from 6-9 PM, Hot Mama in Edina will be hosting an exclusive Ladies Night Out for Carondelet Moms and their friends! Hot Mama will donate 15% of our sales that evening back to Carondelet. We hope you can join us for this fabulous night of shopping, food, drink and friends!

Kindergarten – 8th grade Special Friends Program:  At Carondelet Catholic School we have an unique relationship between kindergarteners  and eighth graders. Each eighth grader builds a special relationship through planned monthly activities during the year with a particular kindergartener. The eighth graders have a chance to befriend someone younger than themselves and provide some leadership skills. The kindergarteners has a chance to bond with an older student, have someone to  look up to, and know that they will have a friend whenever the entire school gathers for events. The students perform together at the Christmas program and do many fun projects together. Our first activity will be Olympics Day on Friday, Sept. 18th from 10:00-11:45. Remember the 9-11 Tribute at Lake Harriet on Sept. 11 at 7:00 PM

Dear Carondelet Parent,

We would like to invite you and your children/students to a wonderful evening of music on Friday night, September 11th 2009 at 7:00 p.m. at the Lake Harriet Band Shell.

The concert is entitled, 9-11 Tribute Our Community Remembers.

This is the 8th time this annual concert has been held in remembrance of a very tragic day in our nation's history. An all volunteer, 63-piece orchestra and 65-voice chorus will perform the music. Rehearsals have been ongoing for the past few weeks. I know the evening will be a wonderful event. Our hosts this year are: Mike Binkley and Angela Davis from WCCO 4 TV.

Some of the music that will be played is: 'The Star-Spangled Banner', 'America the Beautiful', '1812 Overture' and a newly commissioned work entitled: 'Amazing Grace 9-11' which will have it's World Premier that evening. It will be performed by the Zuhrah Shrine Pipes & Drums and the 9-11 Tribute Orchestra/Chorus

During the tribute, we would like the children to participate. As the 'Washington Post March' is played, the young people will be invited to march in a parade circle around the bench seats at the Band Shell. The Masons of Lake Harriet Masonic Lodge will give out hundreds of American Flags for the young people to wave as they march in the parade.

At the end of the concert the entire audience will light vigil candles to honor the 2,996 people that lost their lives on 9-11-2001. We will finish the evening with the song 'God Bless America', and there will be a grand finale of fireworks at the end of the evening.

The concert will last approximately 1-1/2 hours. Friday September isn't a school night so hopefully even the very youngest of your family members can stay up to see the very special ending. The 9-11 Tribute has become an annual event, and it is our intention that it will continue on and will always be held on September 11th at 7pm at the Lake Harriet Band Shell. For more info please visit our web site: http://www.our911tribute.com

Thank you and I hope you and your family can make plans to attend the concert.

Bob Bayers
9-11 Tribute Producer

News Notes September 4, 2009

Ordinary people doing ordinary things extraordinary well. - Rev. Theodore Hesburgh

Welcome to the weekly newsletter! It was a heart-warming sight to witness the happy faces of our returning students and new students this week. New markers, rolls of paper towels, clean and pressed uniforms, and backpacks filled our halls. The teachers looked forward to this day. We welcomed 63 new kindergarteners on Thursday. The excitement abounds. Truly ordinary people are doing things extraordinary well. It will be a wonderful, memorable year of learning, sharing, and growing for all of us.

PLEASE READ:  In an effort to reduce our use of paper, go green, and remain conscientious about our contributions to the environment, we are sending information via email and the website. In order to keep current please take time to READ the information on the events happening at your child's school. Every effort will be made to keep the information pertinent and concise as possible.

Great Opportunity for Students in Grades 3-5 to spend a weekend speaking Spanish:

Hola estudiantes y padres,

Welcome to Spanish in the 2009-2010 school year. We have a fantastic opportunity for students in grades 3-5. On November 6-8, 2009, we can go to the Lago del Bosque Spanish camp at Concordia Language Villages, Bemidji, MN. Are you interested? Please attend an informational meeting on September 10 at 7 pm in the CTK social hall.

If you haven't heard of Concordia Language Camp before, please go to www.concordialanguagevillages.org and see what they have to offer. It is considered one of the best language facilities in the United States and students travel from many states to attend. Additionally, counselors come from many countries to share their language and culture. The school weekends are a great chance to see what it is like, learn about other cultures, practice immersion Spanish and meet other Spanish students all with a group from our own school. The activities include songs, skits, soccer, games and meals among others, all in the target language - Spanish! Don't know much? Don't worry. Lots of charades and acting out what is said helps you learn in a non-threatening atmosphere.

Only 2 weekends per year are offered for this age group. The Spring session is already booked. We have reservations for 30 students, but must commit with down payments by September 15, or lose some spaces. November 6 is a Friday, and also a teacher workshop day, so students would not miss school. The cost is approximately $175 per student plus transportation. Options for that will be discussed at the meeting. We will need both male and female chaperones that will have completed VIRTUS training, had background checks and signed the archdiocesan required volunteer forms. There will also be paperwork for insurance and applications.

In the event more than 30 students apply, we will establish criteria and have a selection committee from the faculty.

Thanks for your interest!
Sinceramente, Sra. Eiden

We are so blessed. We could not have started school without the volunteer help of many people. Special thanks and appreciation goes out to Mark and Jimmy Kumholtz, Dave and Eric Peters for their efforts to drive to Backus to load the new lockers, return to Minneapolis and unload. Jimmy and his Boy Scout troop took on the cleaning and assembling of the lockers as an Eagle Project. With a new coat of paint, the lockers look great in the school colors of green and purple. Now, every student in the middle school has a locker for their coat and books. Thank you.

After we purchased gently used furniture for our new classroom, Lee Stotts volunteered a truck to pick up the furniture. It was a day of hauling by the Student Council officers and their friends. The move went smoothly. We are grateful to Lee and the crew.

A cast of volunteers led by Susan Hellstrom and family came to help us move the office and organize a classroom for our new 4th grade section. Among the volunteers were Jane Mueller, Nancy Driessen, Liz Hannan, and Susie Fry. Many thanks.

The spirit of volunteerism and cooperation is truly alive at Carondelet Catholic School. This is one of the many reasons that people have come to recognize Carondelet as a special place. The teamwork of everyone working together was an amazing and rewarding sight. Everyone has marveled at how the changes have made the school a bright and exciting place to be. We thank you.

9-11 Tribute Producer

News Notes August 21, 2009

Welcome to the 2009-10 school year!

We are opening this year with 54 new families in our Carondelet community. It is an exciting time for the school and its home in the southwest corner of Minneapolis. Even though the school year has not yet begun I wanted to share with our families some of the new developments at school.  The teachers, staff and I are most anxious to see everyone during Open House on Thursday, August 27.

I am pleased to introduce the new members to our staff for this year:

Mrs. Becky Harris - 2nd grade
Mrs. Harris has been a Learning Resource teacher for the Hopkins District last year and previously taught 1st grade at Holy Spirit in Sioux Falls. She is a graduate of St. Cloud State University.

Ms. Jamie Hera - 3rd grade teacher
Ms. Hera comes to us after teaching at St. Elizabeth Seton this past year. St. Elizabeth was closed at the end of this year. Prior to this year, Jamie was a teaching assistant at Breck School and a team teacher in Anoka.  Jamie is a graduate of Winona State University and is currently pursuing her Masters Degree in Curriculum and Instruction at the University of St. Thomas.

Ms. Kristen Rafferty - 3rd grade teacher
Ms. Rafferty spent the last two years teaching 4th grade at St. Stephen's Academy in Kansas City, Missouri. Originally from the Mpls./St. Paul area, Kristen is anxious to move back home. She is a graduate of St. Mary's University - Winona.

Ms. Laura Miller - 4th grade teacher
Ms. Miller has been teaching 4th grade at St. Odilia's School for the past three years and at IHM-St. Luke's, the prior 2 years. She is a graduate of St. Mary's - Winona, where she was a member of fast pitch softball championship team.

Mrs. Michelle Kohlmeyer - 4th grade long-term substitute
Mrs. Kohlmeyer has been teaching in West Allis, Wis. this past year and being recently married moved back to the Twin Cities. She is a graduate of Marquette University. Mrs. Kohlmeyer will be with us until Thanksgiving when Mrs. Reina returns from maternity leave.

Mrs. Patty Shields - Middle School Communications - Gr. 6 & 7
Mrs. Shields has been subbing in the Eden Prairie School District. Before taking a leave to raise her children, Patty taught at Hill-Murray in St. Paul and Garces Memorial High School in Bakersfield, Calif. She is a graduate of College of St. Benedict. In addition, Patty is a 1981graduate of Christ the King School.

Mr. Joe Durben - Part-time Art
Mr. Durben has been a professional artist and designer for more than twenty years.  Following his attendance at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, Mr. Durben worked in the giftware and home decor industry as a designer and creative director, as well as in marketing, licensing and product sourcing and development. He is beginning to pursue his education degree at Augsburg College.

Mrs. Megan Hower - Marketing and Recruiting Coordinator
Mrs. Hower has served in a volunteer position this past year at CCS. She has been extremely helpful in contacting new families, updating the website, and keeping our marketing initiatives moving forward. She will continue those efforts in addition to seeking more marketing opportunities.

We welcome with open arms these new members to our staff. They come to us with solid and knowledgeable backgrounds both academically and in the Catholic faith. The pool of candidates was vast and we were able to choose the very best.

Open House: On Thursday, August 27th, Carondelet Catholic School will host an Open House from 5:00-7:00 to welcome both students and families. Teachers will be here to meet their students and show them around their rooms. It will be time to reconnect with old friends and meet the new students. The members of Home and School Committee will host an ice cream social for families at the Lower Campus. Be sure to join in the festivities.  Kindergarteners are invited to bring their school supplies with them at this time.

Used/Recycled/Exchange Uniform Sale: A used/recycled/exchange uniform sale will be held on Thursday, August 27 from 5:00-7:00 at the LOWER CAMPUS. This sale provides the opportunity to buy a used uniform at a substantially reduced price. You may also bring your child's gently used uniforms and trade them in for bigger sized under the exchange program. If you have any uniforms that your child has outgrown and you wish to donate them, this is the sale that needs them. You may turn in used uniforms to the Upper or Lower Campus Offices at any time. Educational Outfitters will also be at the Lower Campus if you wish to purchase new uniforms.

Kindergarten Announcement:  Kindergarten will begin on Thursday, September 3.  After you have said "good-bye" to your child, we invite you to join Mr. Blanda, the Assistant Principal, Mrs. Farber, the Principal, and members of the Home and School Committee for coffee in the lunchroom at the Lower Campus from 10:00-11:00. It will be an opportunity to meet other parents  and offer help with the transition to kindergarten.

Additional 4th Grade: We want to offer the best education to our students.  Due to the increased enrollment another classroom has been added in fourth grade increasing that grade level to three sections. The Carondelet School Board approved this addition in early August. The space previously used as the Office has become the new 4th grade classroom.

Upper Campus Office: The Upper Campus Office will be sharing space with the Business Office. Children needing medical attention (usually band-aids, wet cloths for their heads, etc) will also be located in the Business Office - Room 100. Space is becoming very tight but we are squeezing together to allow space for our new 4th grade classroom.

Virtus Training: If you will be working with children as a volunteer in any capacity this year it is necessary to complete Virtus Training: Protecting Our Children.  This training is necessary if you are chaperoning field trips, coaching a team, reading to children, working in the library- any position that in which you would contact with a Carondelet student. Training is being offered at Christ the King Auditorium on Saturday, Sept. 19th from 9:00-12:00. If you cannot attend this Sept session more sessions are available in the area. Please check the website www.virtus.org for times and locations.

Monthly Coffee with Becky: In order to honor the request of families with small children two of the monthly coffees will be in the evenings. Please note the change on your schedules which were sent in the August mailing.

Wednesday, Nov. 11    Upper Cmpus Social Hall   7:00-8:30 PM
Wednesday, Jan. 13     Upper Campus Social Hall   7:00-8:30 PM

Board of Directors: Carondelet welcomes the addition of two new members, Jennifer Will and Kent Stuart, to the Carondelet Board of Directors. Welcome aboard!  We are honored to have them volunteer to serve.

Newsletters: will be online and sent by email every Friday of the school year. Look for information regarding building improvements, new programs, and news on composting in future editions.

As we embark on a new school year, I am once again most appreciative of the wonderful and supportive community here at Carondelet. It is going to be a terrific year.  - Mrs. Farber, Principal

Band Note from Mr. Ruhnke, Director:

Welcome back! If you are in the 4th Grade (or older), and would like to sign up for Beginning Band, you may sign up at the Open Hose on Thursday, August 27th. Come and see me at the Band table. When signing up for Beginning Band prior music playing/reading is not required (although always encouraged). There are several types of band instruments that are taught.  The choices include: Flute, Clarinet, Oboe, Trumpet, French Horn, Trombone/Baritone and Tuba.

When signing up for Beginning Band it is important to have a 2nd choice. Sometimes an instrument group is full or the instrument is inappropriate for a student. My suggestion would be to look at several different types of instruments in advance, have a 1st choice and then a 2nd.

A Groth Music Representative will be at the table with me and you may get an instrument/book from them after seeing me.

If you miss me at sign up don't panic.  You can come and visit me during the 1st week of school. Also, please don't feel the need to "rush" the table.  Groth Music will have extra people on hand and we will make sure we fill all requests.

Concert Band students may "drop off" their sheets with me or with Jeanne in the Office at a later date. Beginning Band students who have demonstrated their playing proficiency and have passed into Concert Band may sign up for the Concert Band. Beginning Band students, who have not fully demonstrated their play proficiency yet, should sign up again for the Beginning Band and continue to develop their skills until they have demonstrated mastery of their instrument sufficient for entrance into Concert Band.

The 1st day of Beginning and Concert Band will be Tuesday, September 8th.  Concert Band student should review all of the major scales and be ready to go!

  OUR 2009 CCS GRADUATES

We are proud of their accomplishments and wish them luck on their future endeavors.
Do they look happy?  They are CARONDELET SUCCESSES!!!

Class of ‘09
Grace Holbrook

Time’s running out,
Our lives keep going on,
We tried to make this year last,
But soon we’ll be gone.
Everything will be different
Different from what we’ve done.
These past nine years
Together we’ve had so much fun.

The Sabre Scholarship Award to two – sixth graders: Hana Fritz and Sam Peters for the school year 2009-2010. These students have shown high motivation in their schoolwork and achieved academic success. They have participated in the ministry of social justice and are actively involved in the CTK parish and will continue their education at Carondelet.

The scholarship fund was established by Lorraine and Harold Sabre in 1990 in honor of their Golden Anniversary. We thank the Sabre family for making a Carondelet education possible through their generosity.

The family of Jim Youngblut and Brenda Roth are the recipients of the drawing for $500 scholarship for tuition for those members of our school who contributed to the Fair Share program this year. Congratulations!

What an outstanding Spring Band Concert we heard on May 28th. The Beginning Band’s version on both the U. of Minn. and U. of Wisconsin’s school songs made the audience want to get up and start marching. The Concert Band playing of “The Star Wars Epic” and theme song from “Mamma Mia” helped the audience members remember why we enjoyed those movies. And, the Jazz Band had us all tapping our toes. Great music! Great performance – we are proud of our band students and Mr. Ruhnke.

FINAL REPORT CARDS - The final report cards for the 2008-2009 school year for all students (K-8) will be available on the ChurchWerks website as of 4:00 PM on Wednesday, June 10th.  If you have any questions or problems accessing this information, please call either campus  Office.

REASONS TO CHEER: NEW STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS
Thank you to all the candidates for Student Council offices that prepared speeches and posters for their campaign.  We are so proud of our students, especially all nine of the candidates, for giving their time and talents to make our school the best it can be.

STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS FOR 2009-2010

PRESIDENT:  Zach Neiberger            VICE-PRESIDENT:  Will Jarvis

SECRETARY:  Jack Jablonski             TREASURER:  Graham Fritz

Our Eighth Graders are graduating on TUESDAY, June 2, 2009. The ceremony will be at Christ the King Church at 7:00 PM. Their contributions to our community from their efforts in academics, to the basketball court, to organizing the variety show, to performances in Grease, to playing at the band concert, to their presentations at the History Day State Competition, have made our school proud. We wish them the best on their future endeavors and will miss them. We will never forget the Class of 2009.

Waite House Garden Planting - 1st grade had so much fun at the Waite House community garden this past Saturday. 8 families came to help, including these students: Nate Cumming, Joe Eiden, Natalie Dwyer, Lauren McGarry, Maria Atkinson, Brendan Rosengren, Liam Maves and Emma Jacobson (although Kaleen Pote wins the award for tiniest gardener). Several families from the Waite House community participated as well. Together we planted vegetable seedlings that students grew from seeds in the classroom.  It was fun to get our hands dirty while making new friends and helping others in Minneapolis. Children in the Waite House summer program will care for the garden through the summer.

GREASE PARTY-

Who:    Cast and Crew of Grease and their Carondelet friends, Grades 6-8
When:  Sunday, May 31st 6-10 pm
Where: CTK gym and lunchroom
Details: Dance in the gym to your favorite tunes 6-8 pm
Refreshments in the lunchroom 7-8 pm
Premier showing of Carondelet's Grease 8-10 pm
 Cost:   $1 for refreshments

We've listed some guidelines below:

  • We have reserved only the lunchroom and gym. The students will not be allowed or permitted to wander off anywhere else in the school or church. If a student is found anywhere besides the lunchroom, gym or locker room rest rooms, he/she will be asked to leave the building and will not be allowed to return for the remaining party.
  • All students will be required to sign in and out at the main school entrance. Once that student signs out, they will not be permitted to return to the party.
  • Once the student leaves the gym, lunchroom or restrooms, the student and their parents assume full responsibility for that misguided student's actions.
  • No hand held electronic devices to include cell phones, IPODs or I Phones will be allowed during the celebration. There will be cell phones available if a student would need to make a call. If a student is seen using any of these devises, an adult will keep that devise until the celebration is complete.

Thanks to all the adventurous parents who signed up to help with the party.  The sign up slots are filled to the brim with extra parents to spare.

GREEN DAY-  On Green Day, (we had a special treat of) Michael Martin, Prez of EFFECT and MusicMatters come in and talk to the students about 4 key environmental issues. He talked about Global Warming, Water, Toxins and Waste. He explained why each of these areas are a problem for society and what is being done about it. Most importantly, he talked about steps even kids can take to impact these issues.  As part of this, he and Beth Huebsch created a Green Day Passport that was sent home with each student on Green Day.  When he spoke, there were a lot of questions.  In order to complete the education process and allow the students to get these questions answered, he has agreed to come to a lunch period to answer questions, review all the kid’s passports, and give all the kids who have completed the passports a reward.  We are asking all students to bring in their completed passports to lunch with them on Thursday, June 4th.  Thank you!

Technology- The school is hoping to infuse our teaching with more technology. Technology will not become the teachers, but rather enhance the teachers’ ability to bring the real life world to our children. It is possible to study other countries and travel there visually without boarding an airplane. We can witness the life cycle of a butterfly before our eyes and perform algebraic functions without redrawing the graphs. Today’s lesson from the board can be accessed for review tomorrow on a  “Smartboard”. Our students will experience these possibilities every day if we have the technological equipment to bring it to them. We don’t. Technological equipment is costly. We are looking for parents to help write grants and lead us to sources where we can equip our classrooms with technology without straining our families’ financial budgets. . If you can help, please let us know.

Summer basketball for all ages will be held at the St. Thomas Apostle gym on Sundays from 4 - 6 pm. See flyer sent home last week. Call Mark Gooley for details at 612-823-4301.

The school supply list for school year 2009-10 will be sent home in hard copy this spring. It will be available online after that time.

The lost and found table is set up in the first floor hallway. There are tables at both campuses.  Please take a moment to ask each of your children to peruse the table offerings. All leftover articles will be claimed by school (dress code worthy clothing), donated to charity, or thrown out.

Steak & Salmon Grille:  As many of you know, St. Thomas the Apostle is holding its annual Steak & Salmon Grille (formerly the "Steak Fry") on Saturday, May 30th.  It starts at 6:00 and goes to 11:00.
Renowned local restaurateur, chef, and all-around great guy Joseph Schmidt is again serving dinner.  The Twin Cities' premier Jump Blues band The Senders will again headline the event.  (They were cut off short last year by that hailstorm.)

Tickets are $17 for dinner, dessert, and dancing.  There are no need for advance reservations, but you pay $3 more at the door.  As you can see, this is NOT a fund-raiser for the parish.  It is a social event to get us all together.

The Steak & Salmon Grille is well attended by Carondelet parents, and we hope you can be part of it this year. If you can, let me know by return email.  Contact:  AlanMcCarthy@Q.com or (612) 827-0336

News Notes May 22, 2009

REGISTRATION MATERIAL: Please complete and send in the registration material.  Attention  - families of incoming kindergarteners – the transportation forms must be sent to the Lower Campus by Friday, May 29th in order to have a bus stop assigned to your child. If we don’t receive the form, we cannot guarantee you a bus stop in time for the start of the school year.

REASONS TO CHEER:
This week brought all the Carondelet School together for our closing prayer service at the Lower Campus. The sixth and first- graders led the students in prayer with Fr. Dale Korogi. As a school we bid farewell to Mrs. Snell, Mrs. Jacques, Mrs. Taylor and our beloved 8th
Graders. We will miss them all and wish them the best of luck on their new adventures. It was a beautiful ceremony with popsicles to follow under the hot sun. Thank you to all the parents who joined us.

The April Food drive for Waite House was an outstanding effort. Carondelet School donated 739 pounds of food and  $142.  In March, Carondelet School donated 1131 pounds of food and $579. Minnesota Food Share and Feinstein Foundation matched these donations.  Certainly, your generosity made a difference in many people’s lives.  The final collection of the school year for Waite House will be on the morning of Wednesday, June 3, 2009.  We have one more opportunity to help stock the shelves for the people served by Waite House.  Thank you for your continued support and generosity.

ATHLETIC MEETING: THERE WILL BE A MEETING FOR ALL PARENTS OF FOURTH GRADERS AND THOSE WHO HAVEN'T PREVIOUSLY PLAYED SPORTS IN GRADES 5-8 WITH JANE WHITLOCK, Carondelet's Athletic Director on Wednesday, May 27 at 7:00 in the Upper Campus lunchroom. Jane will be speaking about  the Athletic Program.

VIRTUS TRAINING- The Archdiocese requires all adults engaged in activities with the school children to have Virtus Training and a background check. This requirement includes chaperones for field trips, club leaders, coaches, and classroom helpers. The Virtus Training is free and is a three-hour class. A training session will be held at Christ the King Social Hall on Wednesday, May 27 - 1:00-4:00. If you are planning to be a member of a “Great Band of Volunteers” this session is for you. Other dates and parishes offering the training are available on the Virtus website.

The school is hoping to infuse our teaching with more technology. If you can help, please let us know.

We hope to see you there  Thank you!  Al McCarthy

REASONS TO CHEER: In June Francesca Dawis is going to the National History Day in Washington, D. C.  She placed 2nd in the state in her dramatic performance about Rigoberta Menchu’ Protest for Racial Equality in Guatemala. Please see the letter from the History Day organization below giving further details about the trip and the honor Francesca has received.  If you wish to help defray some of the expenses of Francesca’s trip please send to Carondelet Catholic School in Francesca’s name.

Lexi Clark, a sophomore at Bloomington Jefferson (2007 CCS graduate), has earned an Academic Letter for having a cumulative grade point of 3.5 or higher.

Sixth-grade students Mike Eiden and Emma Meyers will be presenting their inventions from the Regional Young Inventors Fair to the 3M Company employees on May 20, 2009.  Best of Luck t
o these two fine scientists.

Note Time Change to 3:15 - If you have not attended one of the campus’ prayer service or mass please plan to join us on May 20th at 3:15 on the Lower Campus for our closing prayer service for the year.  The pride you will feel in the Carondelet students, the honoring of our Catholic traditions, the great music that is sung by all… it can’t be beat. The children read the petitions with care and passion in their voices. The ceremony resonates with a sense of belonging and true community – a coming together of those who care so much about each other.

HOME AND SCHOOL ANNOUNCES LEADERS FOR NEXT YEAR!
Co-chairs:   Kathleen Eikens and Maureen Monchamp                                    Secretary:   Ann McGarry
Treasurer:   Mary Fisher
Vice Co-chairs:   Libby Amaris and Jennifer Wenner

We look forward to their leadership.

Athletics:  From Jane Whitlock, Athletic Director - It is time to sign up for fall sports.  Carondelet offers volleyball for girls and soccer for boys in grades 5 thru 8.  While I am happy that more kids than ever are joining our teams I want to remind everyone about the commitment level that is expected.  To be fair to everyone on the team your child must be able to attend most of the practices and games.  It is very difficult to teach a child about commitment and working towards a common goal when they aren't at practice regularly.  It is also unfair to coaches who plan practices and the children who do come to practices when only half a team shows up.   I can only rely on the honor system that you and your child talk about their activities and make sure that if you sign up, and we hope you do, you will be able to be a full team member.  The registration forms went home last week with students.  If you need another form please have your child see Jeanne. Please have forms back to Jeanne by May 20th.  Go Saints!

THERE WILL BE A MEETING FOR ALL PARENTS OF FOURTH GRADERS AND THOSE WHO HAVEN”T PREVIOUSLY PLAYED SPORTS IN GRADES 5-8 WITH JANE WHITLOCK, Carondelet ‘s Athletic Director on Wednesday, May 27 at 7:00 in the Upper Campus lunchroom. Jane will be explaining the athletic program.

REASONS TO CHEER:
In June Francesca Dawis is going to the National History Day in Washington, D. C.  She placed 2nd in the state in her dramatic performance about Rigoberta Menchu’ Protest for Racial Equality in Guatemala.  Francesca wrote “From the moment I was introduced to History Day, I knew that I wanted to research an individual tat had a significant but lesser-know impact on our world. Searching online, I came across one woman whose work sounded particularly intriguing to me. During the Guatemalan Civil War which lasted from 1954-1996, Indians, seen as inferior to people of mixed Indian and Spanish decent, were being massacred by the military government. Rigoberta Menchu’ is a Guatemalan native who worked with grassroots organizations to demonstrate and protest against the genocide. “ Clare McCarthy, Margret Sittig, Maggie Noun, Joe Vitt, Grace Van Susteren, Tara Fan, Maddy Kennedy, and Annie Borman also represented our 8th grade. These students place 3rd, 4th and 5th in their respective categories. It is very impressive to have 9 students out of our eighth-grade class of 42 representing us at the State History Day and place so well.  Our congratulations to them and Mr. Josh Nutter, 8th Grade Social Studies teacher, who directed their efforts for weeks prior to the contest. We are so proud of each and every one of you.

Highlights of the CCS group at Space Camp:

Mission Highlights                                                                              Tuesday, May 5, 2009

Missions: Houston, we have lost contact...

You can plan and you can train, but some things just happen. In mission-speak, these are called anomalies. Camp mission coordinators are adept at presenting teams with situations that our crews must respond to. Team Calypso encountered an anomaly that even the staff hadn't planned - communication failure.

At some point the radio headsets went out and contact with the space station crew was lost. Was the problem resolved? And if so, how? You'll just have to conduct your own mission debriefing.

Note: The Rocket Center has an audio- visual monitoring room for chaperones to watch and record the missions. We are recording the mission to DVD.

We are anxious to hear from the group who arrive home today.

What’s new with the H1N1 Flu? We have been notified by the Minnesota Department of Health that we should continue to monitor our student body. Everyone is encouraged to wash hands frequently, cough into their arm or tissues,  and, mostly, to stay home if your child is  experiencing any of the flu symptoms of fever, body chills, headache etc. We will notify our families if a case occurs in our population but we have been advised not to close schools.

The registration forms are going home with students today.  Please have forms back to Jeanne by May 20th.  Go Saints!

Attention Current Cubs and Prospective Cub/Tiger Scouts-
Come to the Spring Carnival Monday, May 11      6-8 in the CTK Parking Lot

Hurrah for spring!  It’s time for the exciting, end-of-the-school-year Spring Carnival.  We’re going to roll back time and create an old-fashioned carnival “Midway” with games and prizes and yes, a jumper. All current scouts, siblings and families are invited, along with anyone who might want to participate as a Cub or Tiger Scout next year (boys entering 1st grade or older).  Please spread the word to anyone you know that might be interested.

Festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. in the CTK parking lot (weather permitting—rain location is the UC gym).  Refreshments will be available, cotton candy and popcorn.

Reminder: On Tuesday, May 12th, the second graders will be visiting the third grade classrooms to check out the transition from Lower Campus to the Upper Campus. The third graders will be answering their questions and the students will spend time with a third grade teacher. The second graders will be dismissed from the Upper Campus at 4:12 to the buses and cars. Car pick up will be on the Upper Campus.  Club Saint students will take the bus form the Upper Campus to the Lower Campus. At 4:20. VIRTUS TRAINING- The Archdiocese requires all adults engaged in activities with the school children to have Virtus Training and a background check. What’s up with Venture Jr. High Youth Ministry?

Take Mom out this Friday!

Parent’s Night out to Support Venture Sr. High Mission trip to Rosebud Reservation.

This July, twelve youth and 3 adults will be headed to Rosebud Reservation to serve for a week in that community.  We’ll be working with the kids there and helping people in the community paint and fix up their homes.  We are doing this to reach out to this community and express God’s love for them through active service.  To help reduce the significant cost for our mission our team is hosting a night of child care for Kindergarten age – 5th graders at Down Under on Friday May 8th from 6:30pm – 10pm.  There will be lots of fun activities for the kids, arts and crafts, gym games, a scavenger hunt, and a treat, supervised by adults and our Sr. Highers from the Mission team while parents can enjoy a night out.  A suggested donation for all this fun for both parents and kids is $25 per child.  If you are interested in a night out for Mom while the kids have a great time, all while helping support our Sr. High please contact Matt Meyers, Director of Youth Ministry, to sign up at 612.920.5030 x28.

News Notes May 1, 2009

GREASE: What a spectacular showing by our Carondelet students. Everyone in the performance was professional, sang with enthusiasm, and danced to new heights. The audiences loved it and parents could not have been prouder of their children. Congratulations to every student who participated.  It was evident that such an effort took an entire community of parents, students and professionals working together. Once more that sense of community that leads our mission statement is evident in our gatherings of members of this community.
The T-birds displayed their “real” personalities, the cheerleaders showed their energy and stunts, while the “Pink Ladies” interplay with each other was so genuine the audience could not believe they were acting. Who could forget the 6th graders opening number about staying together? Who knew we had such a talented group of faculty members who could look beautiful and dance during “Beauty School Dropout.”  The band produced great energy, and sound quality helping all the singers stay on key. The set-up crew had good timing and moved each transition smoothly with grace. Ms. Lick showed what an authority figure she could be. Our appreciation goes to Heather Dorsey for her amazing directing, to Steve Wright for all his work and assistance in directing and to Jeff Ruhnke for providing the cast with great music. Hats off to Tim Voltz who was a member of the Creative Team. And to the cast of volunteer parents who supervised rehearsals, provided the snacks, scrambled to find the costumes, videotaped the show, and drove the children to rehearsals we owe a heap of gratitude.  Grease would not have been a reality without you. Thank you very much.

Grease Leftovers: Found after Sunday's performance of Grease at Southwest - a small black camera case with a battery charger - it does not contain a camera.   Please see Jeanne at the upper campus to claim.
Slippers, hoodies, socks found after the show. Please claim in the upper campus hallway.

REASONS TO CHEER: If you have not attended one of the campus’ prayer service or mass please plan to join us on May 20th at 3:30 at the Lower Campus for our closing prayer service for the year.  The pride you will feel in the Carondelet students, the honoring of our Catholic traditions, the great music that is sung by all… it can’t be beat. Dawis Sisters to Perform in Honors Recital

Isabella Dawis, 16, Southwest High School, and her sister Francesca, 13, Carondelet Catholic School, were chosen to perform in MacPhail’s Spring Honors Recital, Friday, May 8, at 7:30 p.m. in MacPhail’s Antonello Hall. Isabella will perform the piece Sonata No. 3 in A Major, op. 69- I. Allegro, ma non tanto by Ludwig van Beethoven with cellist Rose Marie Bart, and Francesca will perform the piece Sonata No. 3 in A Major, op. 69- I. Allegro, ma non tanto by Ludwig van Beethoven. Both are students at MacPhail Center for Music.

USED/ RECYCLE/ EXCHANGE UNIFORM SALE

Have you wondered what to do with those uniforms once your child has outgrown them? Wouldn’t it be convenient to trade one of your child’s pair of pants or skirt for a larger size to wear next year? The Clothes Swap – used/recyled/ exchange uniform sale is happening on May 3 at the Lower Campus from 1:00-3:00. You have many options. You may exchange clothes, turn in the uniforms your child has outgrown, or purchase new ones. To exchange, clothes in slightly used condition will be accepted, and color-coded tickets will be given to the providers. You may exchange them for different clothing or keep the tickets to exchange at the fall sale. Or you may donate the clothing to the sale.
Educational Outfitters, the uniform provider will be in attendance for those wishing to purchase new uniforms.
The sale will include all uniform items plus optional clothing such as fleece jackets, Carondelet tie-dyed and t-shirts.
Another sale will be held before school starts in the fall  (mid- August) and during Welcome Back to School Night, August 27th.

In January the Carondelet Math Club participated in the MathCounts Competition.  Matthew Elfstrand ranked fifth in the individual competition. Ben Albert placed fourth in the countdown round. Carondelet had 5 competitors place in the top twenty-five and the team round the students placed sixth overall. Matthew Elfstrand and Ben Albert were among the top 16 finalists. Some of the questions were:
What is the sum of the prime factors of 91?
Find m such that (m+5)/(m-5)+(m-5)/(m+5).   Remember you have 45 seconds and everyone is watching. !!!

Congratulations to Matthew and Ben. Way to Go! Thanks to Ms. Mack for coaching and practicing with them.

Information related to H1N1 flu is attached below. Please read it carefully. If your child shows symptoms, see a doctor and have them stay home.  We will notify families via email immediately if we have any reported cases at school. That email will contain all the information regarding the continued operation of the school.

Dear Parents/Guardians,

The World Health Organization (WHO) has been monitoring a potentially serious virus H1N1, formerly called “swine flu.” In the United States, 12 states have confirmed cases with one confirmed case in Minnesota.
Public health officials suggest taking the following steps to help prevent the spread of illnesses such as the seasonal viral flu:
•    Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue away immediately after you use it.
•    Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. If you are not near water, use an alcohol-based  hand cleaner.
•    Avoid close contact with people who are sick. When you are sick, keep your distance from others to protect them from getting sick too.
•    If you get the flu, stay home from work, school and social gatherings. In this way you will help prevent others from catching your illness.
•    Try not to touch your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs often spread this way.

Additional information is available from the following websites:
Center for Disease Control (CDC): http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/

Minnesota Department of Health: http://health.state.mn.us/divs/idepc/diseases/flu/swine/index.html

If you have questions, please contact your healthcare provider or call the MDH hotline between 8:00 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. at 1-800-657-3903.

Registration materials
for school year 2009-2010 were sent home this week. Please look them over carefully especially the optional payment plan using Electronic Funds Transfer.  It saves postage, envelopes; check writing for you and trips to the bank for us. It is a good time to check if your child’s immunization are current and schedule the physicals with your physician now.

SPACE CAMP:  The following students, 4th grader Ben Smogard, 5th graders Matt Ruff and Frankie Gormley, 6th graders Mike Eiden, Chris Kesicki, and Sam Peters and Sam Hedlund, 8th Grader Eric Peters will be heading to Space Camp this week. Space Camp is a weeklong educational program held in May in Huntsville, AL. The children participate in all sorts of exciting activities where they'll learn about flight and the kind of training astronauts experience. Reach for the Stars is a local non-profit group (501c3) affiliated with the Minneapolis Public Schools, and they have been raising funds and teaching children about flight and sending students to Space Camp for 14 years. The children love the experience and say it's the most fun they've ever had learning about math and science. Who knows - maybe some will become astronauts someday!  We can’t wait for the students to share their knowledge    with us.  Thank you to the parents and kids that purchased candy bars, silent auction
items, etc. to help raise money for this trip. It would not be possible without your help.

There is no charge for tickets, and all seats are general admission.  The ticket table will open 1 hour prior to the show start time, and the auditorium will open 1/2 hour prior to show time.  Southwest High School is at 3414 47th Street -- please come in door number 3.  It is going to be GREAT!

REASONS TO CHEER: If you have not attended one of the campus’ prayer service or mass please plan to join us on May 20th at the Lower Campus for our closing prayer service for the year.  The pride you will feel in the Carondelet students, the honoring of our Catholic traditions, the great music that is sung by all… it can’t be beat. The children read the petitions with care and passion in their voices. The ceremony resonates with a sense of belonging and true community – a coming together of those who care so much about each other.

It is with great pleasure that we announce the 2009/2010 Home and School co-chairs...Kathleen Eikens and Maureen Monchamp!  Thank you for volunteering to chair this very important position in our school structure.

Today we received a check for $1254 from General Mills for our efforts in collecting box tops under the BoxTops4Education program. A flyer defining all the various box tops to save from General Mills’s products will be the weekly church bulletin at both parishes. This program offers us the opportunity to provide the extras for our students. Part of this check will provide the transportation to the Variety Show in May. All the school will be able to participate in this fun event at the Lower Campus.

DeLaSalle High School proudly recognizes current junior Katherine Sittig, an alumna of Carondelet Catholic, for her remarkable recent performance on the ACT College Entrance Exam.  Katherine earned a composite score of 36, the highest possible score one can earn on the ACT.  Katherine is another fine example of the standard of graduates of Carondelet.  Way to go, Katherine.

DeLaSalle High School proudly announces that 18 of its twelfth grade students, including six alumni/ae of your school, have earned recognition as a “Distinguished Scholar” in DeLaSalle’s Class of 2009.  At DeLaSalle, “Distinguished Scholars” are students whose cumulative grade point average is at 4.0 (or higher due to grade points earned in Honors classes) after the second semester of their twelfth grade year.  Megan Dolezal, Ellie Engelen, Ellie Graiziger, Ellie Griep, Lizzie Houns, and Michael Van de Weghe, all graduates from Carondelet Catholic, are among the group to earn this distinction in DeLaSalle’s Class of 2009.  They and the other Distinguished Scholars will be formally recognized at Senior Awards Day and at the Baccalaureate Mass and Program in May.  Lizzie Houns also will be recognized again as a National Merit Scholarship Finalist, based upon her outstanding performance on the PSAT, among the top one percent of all high school seniors in the country

The Clothes Swap – used/recyled/ exchange uniform sale is happening on May 3 at the Lower Campus from 1:00-3:00. You have many options. You may exchange clothes, turn in the uniforms your child has outgrown, or purchase new ones. You may exchange them for different clothing or keep the tickets to exchange at the fall sale. Or you may donate the clothing to the sale.
Educational Outfitters, the uniform provider will be in attendance for those wishing to purchase new uniforms.

Grease is definitely the Word!

Dear Greasers,

In addition, rehearsals are posted on our website and our posted outside of Mr. Wright's room.  Now get back to rehearsing your roles and keep up all of your hard work!  See you at rehearsals.

Coach Calhoun

Carondelet staff members have heard about a man driving around taking pictures of students walking home. In addition, there was a potential abduction case in Edina this past week. Please take time to speak with your children about personal safety issue and precautions to take for their safety.

REASONS TO CHEER:  Our very own, Ms. Becky Clark has been awarded admission to the Ellis Island Institute’s NEH Landmarks in American History and Culture workshop to be held on Ellis Island. Ms. Clark is one of 80 teachers accepted nationwide for this program. She will be studying at the institute and taking field trips around New York City to explore the path our ancestors took coming to America. Among the trips will be Lower East Side Tenement Museum, Museum of Chinese in America, 3 days at Ellis Island - including the un-restored buildings. Ms. Clark will be sharing her new knowledge with her 3rd grade students next year during the Immigration Unit. We are very proud of her.
