September 8 Wednesday

Students in 6-Sh did not have science class; the upper campus students returned to campus at 11:35 and the Wednesday MASS schedule was followed, so classes resumed beginning with 2nd period class.  In 6-Su, students took Memories tests 3,4 and 5 and discussed the tests.  They brainstormed and discussed learning strategies.

HOMEWORK:  Finish essay (see Tuesday)

September 7 TUESDAY

In the classroom, students will define six terms in their composition notebooks:  Long-term memory, short-term memory, learning, memory, declarative memory, Mnemonic devices.  Explain the difference between long term and short term memory.

The class discusses the definitions of memory, learning, mnemonic device and declarative memory.  Composition notebooks and lab manuals will be collected for grading in 6 Su on Tuesday and in 6 Sh on Wednesday.

Tuesday's HOMEWORK

Write a two-paragraph story about how you learned to do something that took time to learn, but which you know well now.  Using the language in the reading (p 23-24), identify the learning strategies you used. Please type the story.  Due on Thursday

September 3

In class, students spent the full class time in the computer room using the Memory game to investigate the difference that using one sense versus several has on what we remember. They completed a data chart listing:  Trial number, sense or senses used, time allowed and score. Four trials are required.

HOMEWORK:  Try the game at home.  Be sure that you finish and record data for at least four trials.

September 2

In class, students observed what happens when they learn a new skill.  They used the skill of mirror writing (p 1 lab manual) as an investigation.  They began a series of memory tests to observe the effect that using one sense versus multiple senses has on learning. (Memory tests 1,2 and 3) 6-Sh students were photographed.

HOMEWORK  6-Sh please complete mnemonics cards.  Both classes do p 3, lab manual.  Books must be covered and  notebooks set up.

September 1

In class, 6-Sh learned to use the cubbies for other materials in the classroom, discussed how to use the agenda/homework board in the classroom, and were introduced to the textbook.  They each received an index card on which to record their mnemonic (lined side) and a line diagram of themselves by Friday. (6-Su completed the cards in class today and photos were taken of students present.)  They learned how to set up their science composition notebook with title page and numbering.

HOMEWORK:  Read pages 23-24 in the textbook. (Tomorrow's homework:  Complete page 3 in the lab manual.) Due Friday:  Book must be covered; notebook pages must be numbered.

August 31

In class student partners used the "Read/Say something" method to review science classroom topics and policies discussed on Tuesday.  The students were shown how to locate the science web page on the Carondelet web site.  Students were also introduced to the FOSS web page (user name and password are required--get these from Mrs. Cope) and to the science links on Mrs. Cope's 6th grade science page

HOMEWORK: none

August 30
In class students got the 6th grade science textbook that will be used in Mrs. Cope's science classes this Fall:  Human Brain and Senses.  The text must be covered and brought to class each day.  Students each received a Human Brain and Senses lab manual.  Some of the science classroom routines were discussed:
  • Feel free to e-mail any time a student is confused, concerned or extra help is needed.  Mrs Cope's school e-mail address is: ccope@carondelet-mpls.org.
  • TAB-in location is the tall lab stool in the back of the room. Students need to sign in.
  • Restroom sign-out and pass is on the teacher's desk at the front of the room.  Ask permission before leaving; select a time when you will not miss out on instruction.
  • Lab manuals are collected every two weeks.  Assignments will be checked during class more frequently.  Notebook and lab manual work counts 30% of the grade. Conduct counts 5%. Tests, projects and other assessments count 65%.

Learning a song or a set of hand motions can be a mnemonic device.  The alphabet song is an example.  Another way to remember information is through association.

HOMEWORK:  Develop a mnemonic device that will help your science teacher remember your name. (Due Wednesday)
Set up composition notebook:
Write "Science 6-1, Mrs. Cope" and your own name on the cover page.  Then number that page 1 and the BACK of the first page 2.  Continue and number all of the pages front and back.  Write "Table of contents" at the top of page 2.
Cover your textbook. (Due Friday)
