Mrs. Phillips' Homepage Welcome to Classroom 202!
HOMEROOM NEWS:
May 2 We are reading about signs - natural signs like a rainbow, for example. Students who were in class today discussed items that are memories of a person or place they have visited. No homework.
Apr. 16 Students have finished the Family Life Growing in Love book. We will be interviewing Father Dale on Wednesday about his call to the priesthood and he will be answering questions about the lifestyle and duties. We will then begin the religion book about the 7 sacraments.
Mar. 22 Students are working on two things tomorrow in Religion. One, the word for LOVE in many different languages that they will print and post around the school. Secondly, we're making a booklet of service opportunities they could participate in throughout the community. We'll hopefully be able to work on this in class.
Mar. 13
We have finished the Jesus in the New Testament text book and are completing the Personal Safety curriculum. There will be no homework in that section. Students are learning about personal power, reporting, knowledge, and authority and how they can be empowered for good.
Feb 27 Today we looked at letters from the apostles and disciples to see what messages they gave to their followers. We will finish reporting on these Wednesday. No homework. Check Cornerstone for any continuing missing assignments. I gave everyone a heads up and written reminders last Friday.
Feb 23 During religion time we watched homeroom highlights yesterday. No assignments.
Feb 16 Don't forget to check out the Go-Go art project. I forwarded everyone a reminder and a picture from Kim Bacic - it looks really good! You can bid on it during the silent auction at the Go-Go. Religion homework from Monday is not yet collected. We'll get it Friday.
Feb 8 Parents came today to work on an art project that will become part of the donations for auction part of the GoGo.
Feb 6 Went over parts of the Mass today. Students do not have to memorize them! No homework.
Feb 2 No religion homework. Tomorrow is Dress your Best day. Mass at 1:15 followed by pride activities after that. Students sure have shown their school spirit this week.
Jan 30 If students have not turned in their chapter 6 test in Religion, it is now OVERDUE. No homework in religion. We are looking at Jesus' mission to his apostles.
Jan. 12 Students are still in Ely. Tonight, Thursday, they will be jumping through a hole in the ice. Seriously? This tends to be their favorite memory of the trip.
Nov. 9: In religion we are expanding our understanding of Jesus' life and talents. Homework is only on a not-finished-during-class basis.
Oct. 12: In Religion we are looking at the characteristics of Jesus' personality - he was approachable, respectful, concerned, and humble. No homework.
6th SCIENCE: Link to Invention Website
May 2 Students have finished tasting jellybeans and locating taste buds on their tongue. Today we began to smell products that they have brought from home. Wow, lots of stinky stuff we have at home. But at least SOME smelled really good. We will finish that lab tomorrow and answer questions about taste and smell. Probably Friday we will begin our Chemistry unit. And no, nothing will be explosive!!!
Apr. 18 Students are redoing and reworking some of the activities on sound. We are working on following the directions!!!! Answering questions fully. Hopefully, we will finish today. Therefore, the study guides, review and test are extended into next week. Apr. 16 Students have been working on the sense of sound. Oh, the banging and ringing!! In partners and groups they have been exploring tuning forks, sound waves, decibels, parts of the ear, and creating sounds from rubber bands, straws, and from tubes called Boomwhackers. A lot of fun was had by all, but a lot of learning, too. We will go over many of the activities today and finish up all activities. Tomorrow students will receive study guides for this unit, we will go over all information on Wednesday, and the test for sound will be on Thursday. Mar 22 Students have been working on the sense of touch. We touched receptors on the backs of hands, arms, fingertips and necks, then measured reaction time based on sight, sound, and touch. Today we tried to rank sandpaper based on touch and found out about grit, grade, and uses of sandpaper.
Mar 13 We spent that last 3 days watching the movie "The Miracle Worker" about Helen Keller and Annie Sullivan. The students were awed by the behavior of Helen as a youth and the miraculous change when words became knowledge. Today we read an excerpt from her autobiography "The Story of my Life". Some may want to check it out of the library or purchase it to read. It's an amazing journey through Helen's life. Helen Keller graduated from Radcliffe college in 1904 with honors and went on to be a spokewoman throughout the United States for blind peoples' rights. She wrote several books and passed away in 1968. Students have a few summary essay questions to answer for homework tonight.
Feb 27 Ask your students about EEG electrodes. We "glued" them on our craniums today, and many kept them on through lunch. We're seeing the electrical activity in the cerebral cortex and what activities may have been going on during the testing. No homework.
Feb 23 Students did a great job on the science test. If anyone wants to do a redo, it's due by Monday, February 27th. We are now identifying parts of the brain and their functions. We're using some videos to try to learn names and parts.
Feb 16 TEST TOMORROW!!!!!!!! FRIDAY'S TEST IS ON THE EYE PARTS AND FUNCTIONS, EYE CONDITIONS, THE BLIND SPOT, PHOTORECEPTORS, AND THE EYE DISSECTION. We studied in class for the last 2 days. They seem to really know their parts and functions.
Feb 8 We only had time to finish the data collection and do page 25 in the lab book. Students then left for their field trip to the Minneapolis Convention Center for the Physics demonstrations.
Feb 7 We finished collecting all the data after using the angle finders. We'll continue with the summary questions tomorrow. Feb 6 Students received their invention entry forms back today along with the judges' scoring and recommendations. Students have the OPTION to enter their form in to the YIF regional competition. If you would like to enter, the corrected forms are due back to me by FRIDAY!!!! Forms MUST BE on the official YIF Word document. If a student does not have access to this at home and want to enter, they can go over to a friend's house OR make arrangements with Mrs. McManus or myself to stay after school and we can help them get the official form filled in. We are still finishing up the peripheral vision tests and have not yet had time to collect data - we will do that for sure tomorrow and then students will receive the conclusion questions to answer and finish for homework IF they don't get done.
Feb 2 Today we continued investigating peripheral vision - the difference between identifying motion, colors, and now being able to read letter. We have angle finders they put up to their forehead and a partner moves the card to be identified slowly towards the front of their head. They are amazed at the big difference between seeing color out of the corner of their eye and NOT being able to see the letters. No homework, no science class tomorrow. See you Monday.
Jan 31 Today we went on line for some amazing optical illusions and visual activities. Students can access these at home by typing in vision activities in the finder bar and choosing Neuroscience for Kids. All questions from the FOSS Optics Bench should have been turned in.
Jan 30 The inventions are AMAZING! Students are sharing in the lower grades and talking to them about the process. There is no homework today - we went on line to the FOSS website to look at bending light and investigating lenses. We will do more tomorrow in the computer lab. After finishing a reading in the resource book, we should be able to review on Thursday and have our first Brain and Senses test on Friday.
January 17th
Many inventions came in today!! So far they look great and we had two terrific presentations. All other products and boards should be turned in tomorrow, Wednesday. We will be presenting in class followed by questions and comments to the presenters through the rest of the week. FINAL official entry form that needs to be filled out and printed AT HOME is due Wednesday, January 25th. Students will sign up to visit other classrooms next week to share the inventions, and we'll return to our unit on the eye and light.
January 12
As we wind down the invention process, the dates on the timeline left are: The product and the board and the original corrected entry form questions are due on Wednesday, January 18th. We will then present our inventions in class to our fellow students, and can sign up to talk about the inventions in lower grade classes. The FINAL official entry form that needs to be filled out and printed AT HOME is due Wednesday, January 25th.
Today, Thursday, we'll be dissecting the eyes and comparing them to our own eye observations.
Just a note: Because of the lab kits and materials necessary for each unit in sixth grade, Mrs. Cope and I do NOT teach the same units at the same time. The other sixth grade science class is currently in the Invention Unit and will be moving to the Force and Motion.
In science we are studying a unit on The Human Brain and the Senses. You should see the lab manual coming home occasionally.
Students in science will not usually have homework. Occasionally if not finished in class, they may need to complete workbook pages. They should have recorded this in their planner.
8th GRADE SCIENCE:
May 2 EIGHTH GRADERS!!!! Check Cornerstone. Holy moly there are a LOT of missing assignments. Let's not let down this far from the end. You still have work to do and homework to get in. Do it BEFORE next week - tech week is far to busy to have to make up stuff. The past few days we learned about the layers of the earth, techtonic plates and their speed of movement, earthquakes's focus, epicenter, and faults, and how to locate earthquakes on a map. Today we started plotting earthquakes' epicenters so we will be able to relate those to volcanoes and the Ring of Fire.
Apr. 18 The maps and questions about Pangea were due TODAY. We are now looking at sea floor spreading and techtonic plate movement.
Apr. 16 Students have finished up the rock cycle and are now learning about the continent of Pangea by illustrating 5 separate indicators on their maps of the continents and reconnecting them using these structures. Today, Monday, we should be finishing up the activity and starting the summary questions. Next in this unit will be earthquakes - their cause, location, repercussions, etc.
Mar 22 Students have tested minerals and identified them as best they could. Today they began the introductions to rocks and will be identifying them Friday and Monday.
Mar 13 Students are working on a huge lab project, testing minerals for luster, hardness, color, streak, cleavage, fracture, specific gravity and 10 other minor characteristics. They will be doing all the analyses and then trying to identify their 20 mineral samples. There would be no homework throughout this lab. Following this, students will learn the identifying characteristics for the three categories of rocks.
Feb 27 Fabulous History Day projects, people!!! Since I did not see students today, we'll get caught up and/or start on our second activity that will demonstrate radioactive half life.
Feb 23 As we begin the unit on Radioactivity students asked probing questions and were quite interested in radiation and its effects. We did a lab that introduced radioactive half life and will be doing the conclusions questions today in class. We have a second half-life lab that shows how some elements have a different time frame when it comes to decaying.
Feb 16 We are finishing the second lab on natural versus synthetic fibers. The first went very well when they could rip fabric and soak it in various liquids. The past 2 days were spent on Tensile Strength - the amount of force needed to break the bonds of a polymer (thread). IF not finished, some took the questions home to finish the last few questions for homework. Most teams finished in class. Next we're off to studying radioactivity.
Feb 8 Students corrected and handed in homework, then began a lab activity on the likenesses and differences between natural and synthetic polymers. This will probably take the next 3 or 4 days.
Feb 7 Students finished the hydrocarbons models and worksheet. Homework: Read pages 97-104. Homework: Do pages 108 all and page 109 the two questions numbered ONE only.
Feb 6 We worked on the hydrocarbon worksheet today - we will finish it for sure tomorrow in class, going over what substituted hydrocarbons are and the various types.
Feb 2 Worked on hydrocarbons today - students took notes on how to put them together by using prefixes and suffixes, what ISO means in a compound. One class will begin the hydrocarbon worksheet tomorrow and the other on Monday. Fun activities tomorrow afternoon led by the eighth graders as pride leaders.
Jan 31 FINISH the chapter review on pages 60-61. Page 60 ALL (except on the Concept Map JUST fill in the 3 empty spaces - do NOT do the rest). Page 61 Concept Mastery do numbers 3, 4, 6, and 9. Page 61 Critical Thinking do numbers 1, 2, 4, and 5. This is due Wednesday and counts as the chapter 2 test.
Jan 30 This week we are balancing equations (a homework sheet tonight if it was not finished in class) and looking at rates of chemical reactions. We should get into the physical and chemical characteristics of OOBLECK this week, too.
January 17 Today we took the final test on the element symbols. We are starting a long-lived lab on Mystery Powders - both physical observations and chemical reactions. This will be on-going at least 6 days, so at least until next Wednesday.
Remember to get all missing work and redoes in by FRIDAY this week.
January 12
Two more quizzes on the element symbols - today and tomorrow. We are learning about the types of chemical reactions today, then planning how to test characteristics of multiple compounds. The final test on the element symbols will be Tuesday, January 17th.
