Math:
This week we are starting Unit 8, working on solving equations and working with variables.  This week we are working on Daily Practice for week 22. Remember there will be an assignment due each day with Daily Practice.

For all homework assignments, tests, and quizzes students are given a redo option.  If they choose to redo an assignment or test, students should complete the problems they missed on a piece of loose leaf paper and attach the loose leaf to the original paper.  This is to be done once I have posted the score for the assignment or test.

Communications:
Students have officially been assigned to write a creative writing piece, using all of the elements that we have been working on for the last few weeks.  The students need to type their assignment in Google Docs, for editing and working purposes.  The final draft will be due on May 10th.  Students will be meeting with their adult editor one more time this week and will get their final assignment sheet as well.

We will also continue to read Maniac Magee as a class book.  There will be an end of book project due on Monday, May 14th.

Social Studies: In 5th grade we will be studying American history.  We will begin our journey with early exploration and will end with the writing of the U.S. Constitution and the establishment of our government.

Students will be learning about the Constitutional Convention and how our government formed.  Each student will be assigned a specific delegate to research and in a few weeks, we will hold our own Constitutional Convention.  Students will be able to understand firsthand what a difficult task the Founding Fathers had in setting up a new government and appreciate the work that was put into this formation, which still exists today.

Science:

The students have planned and planted their own terrariums to kick-off our Environments unit.  Students will make observations over the next few weeks.  This week, we will study 2 different kinds of bugs and will learn more about their preferred water environment.

This year we will have FOSS units in Food and Nutrition, Landforms, Levers and
Pulleys and Environments.
